As a language student myself, I advise you to revert back to childhood. Think about how you learned to speak English. Observation, communication, trial and error, study and everyday usage of the language. I like to watch the news and cartoons in spanish. Those present the clearest most understandable dialogue. I also have many hispanic friends that I speak with and talk to over the internet. In addition to this, I study spanish at the university. There I learn the tools; grammar, syntax semantics, to use the language properly. However, it is not enough to do any of these things alone. Language acquisition is not the easiest thing as an adult, but if you immerse yourself and stick with it, I say in a couple years you could be speaking very well.

How comitted are you to learning?

I suggest:
1. Go to your local bookstore/Amazon.com and buy a Basic Spanish CD course or take classes, but I like to learn at my own pace.
2. Buy a good Spanish/English dictionary to look up words while doing #3, 4 and 5.
3. Read online Spanish newspapers, as they will have proper grammar.
4. Listen to online Spanish radio station and buy a couple of music CDs
5. Find penpals (penpalworld.com) and chatpals, especially if you can use Voice chat.
6. Travel to a country and use it and make friends!

Learning Spanish from all these directions will make it enjoyable and increase your absorption of the language.

Take classes. Once you have a few under your belt, study abroad for a summer, a semester, or a year. You will gain a greater appreciation of the language and the culture that way. It will also give you many opportunities to practice (at the markets, in class, etc.) Sign up for a program where you will live with a host family. Practice, practice, practice! Listen to international radio stations (many on the internet), watch TV in Spanish (Univision or Gala), read newspapers in Spanish (see link below).

I am fluent in Spanish and it only took me 4 years. Of course living in southern california is an advantage. But you can make friends and try to talk to them and only hang out with them. I used to watch "las noticias" news channel everyday and watch every single movie in spanish. I also bought "la opinion every day" and read entirely looking up the words i did not not know. And finally i study vocab on my own. But what help me most was that my dad own a restaurant with mexican employees and i gre up with them speaking spanish. I also speak French and so it an advantage.

I took Spanish classes in high school. If that's the route you go, then try going to a local college or something. If you don't want to do that then try one of those disks they have out. I never tried them but I guess it's worth a shot if you really want to learn the language.

Hi Dave,

The best place I has seen to learn spanish is a site called rocket spanish. It's great! They have audio sessions that really help you pick up the accent and pronounciation.

I found them here --> http://7747c.rspanish.hop.clickbank.net

Goodluck!

The best way to learn any language would be immersion. Go to the country and immerse in it for a few months.
