So my boyfirend and I are moving out together in January. We have been together for two years. We are very excited. Thing is we both have a little debt (around $2000 each). We also need to get a lot of things for the apartment, like furniture and stuff.

I have a daughter and he has a son, so I am also worried about christmas for them. We would wait a little longer, but we cant, his parent have told him January 2007 is his deadline to get out.

How can we pull this off? We need a plan....please give me any ideas. We would like to move out debt free, just so that monkey is off of our backs.

PS We both go to school. I work 35 hours a week and he works like 30, but he is going to get a second job after his custody hearing.
We each make around $1500 a month. there are few other bills invovled, not totaling more than $400 on each side. Plus the expenses of raising two kids.

I know this is kind of not related to this topic, but a lot of really smart people hang in here.

the rent itself does not scare us. It is $575 a month for a two bedroom, all bills paid. not in the nicest area. but i have faith that we will be safe. Ohh and protected with a little renters insurance.

Try thrift stores like Good Will or Salvation Army. It's like a permanent garage sale. My husband loves shopping there. We got our couch for $35. See if any friends have an extra bed or mattress that you can borrow until you can get your own. Some thrift stores wil sell new mattresses. But if all else fails the floors are ok for a month or two, just put down a towel or blanket and pretend your camping.
Good Luck with your move!

If you have some place to store some things for the apartment, now would be the time to hit up garage sales. That is what I did. I bought my couch for $30, and then after a while, I was able to buy a slipcover so it was what I wanted. You can get so much at a garage sale at a very cheap price. Even if you only have a couple bucks.

Also, don't move into a place that will break your bank too. You don't need the nicest apartment in the city. Stop eating out, and buy only things on sale. I cut coupons too. They can save a bundle and if the things are usually on sale, mostly condiments, they come out to be like a 10 cents. Start saving now. For Christmas, you will have to save.

I would check to see if you have a consignment shop for kids and babies. You can toys at around half off if not more. I did this last year too. I don't know how old they are, but they shouldn't care.

There is no reason that either of you can't get both of your debts down to nothing by January. You just have to have discpline. If you both want it bad enough, you can make it happen.

I would not buy anything for the apartment. Atleast not anything you have to buy on credit.

You can sleep on the floor and eat with four forks and cook in a skillet if you have to. And buy what you need little by little.

We've done it before, and we did it when i was a kid. And i promise you we survived and were unharmed by such a 'scary' thing as living with no beds for a couple months.

It sure beat the hell out of being in debt.

Plus, i'd save up ever penny you can now. Every single penny. Stop buying anything you can. Shut down any service you can live without, dont buy things for your kid that isnt absolutely needed. Change how youre eating for a little while, dont eat out, dont eat perfect food. Eat things you have to cook even if theyre not your favorite.

You can save up quite a few thousand dollars in just a couple months time. just you. Imagine if he did the same. You both would have quite a stash of cash.

just dont buy anything on credit. resist that urge. Before you know it you'll both be out of debt and you'll have all the nice things you wanted for your apartment.

Go to a garage sale /moving sale to get some furniture for you appartment. New furniture are way too expensive.

Consolidate your debt if possible.. if they are credit card ones, move all of those to those "0% for 3 month" new credit card offers, and transfer balance (do it a few times until you are paid off, watch for fine prints on charges for balance transfers). If you can't do that, pay off the debt with the most expensive interest first.

You will just have to pinch pinch pinch those pennies and save as much as you can and pay these expenses too. You may not think so but a lot of people are in debt sooooo much more than you and your boyfriend. Just have faith and do the best you can at saving. I wish you the best. God Bless
