Your question doesn't apply to all Sunnis and shias, just some and it's disturbing to many Muslims too. After-all we are all Muslim. I am Sunni and have out most respect for my shia brothers and sister, disagree on some issues but I disagree with Sunnis too on some matters too. When we don't get along it's our loss. Personally, we live among shia, I pray in a shia Mosque, and shia friends...all love ..no hate. When we get along it doesn't reach the headlines, when we don't it does. So, for the average outsider it might seem like all we do is kill eachother and bomb eachothers mosques. For me I know it's not true because I lived amongst Muslim communities where, shia and sunnis coexist peacefully.

I don't think so. I am a Shiite, and I don't hate the companions of the prophet. I don't think Prophet Muhammad is a god, either. I am not a wahhabiyya, nor do I hate Sunnis. There are so many of them that have been great friends of mine...
I know many, many, many people who have converted to Islam straight into Shiites. It is actually a very common thing.
It doesn't matter who's right and who's wrong. True, I believe I am correct; but this doesn't make me any better than Sunnis. I think that the problem between us wouldn't have been as big as this if others hadn't intervened. Other people of different religions try to widen the gap between us, and tell lies about the other sect to make us hate them. The only difference is that we believe in 12 Imams as successors to the Prophet, and Sunnis don't. There are other minor differences, very slight, in prayer, wudu, and fiqh or tafseer. Otherwise, we are much more similar than you think.
P.S. I don't think any of the Imams are gods, either, and I pray to the one and only god, Allah. Just like any other Muslims. Some of you are EXTREMELY ignorant!!!! It's so hard to explain stuff to those of you who have incorrectly assumed things that are wrong!

Well, it started as a religious leadership war, but there are a lot of ethnic things involved now, mainly between Arabs and non-Arabs.
Arabs are actually Semites, and the others are Japhethites. Their language roots are even different.
That conflict is really pre-Muslim and dates from the time of the prophet Daniel, when the Babylonians were overthrown by the Persians.

Why do Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland hate each other so much? It's the same thing. They grow up in a place where one group has power over the other, and some cleric somewhere starts claiming God likes them better, and the resentment grows.

It's sad isn't it, my Dear? It's the same for Protestants and Catholics if you really get down to it. Both Christian but both seeing each other as the root of all evil (figuratively of course, or I hope...) I think the Islamic community is beginning to go through their Reformation, like the Western world did a thousand years ago. Its a very trying and traumatic time for all of us. I just wish we'd all agree to disagree on the name of the Divine instead fo killing each other. Blessings on you.

Who said, they hate each other? It’s totally wrong and misunderstood. They believe Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Some forces are using dividing rule policy at present and their feeling is they are succeed & they are happy, but one day will come to fight collectively (Sunni & Shia) against these chaos and to be scraped these divide makers, like once British Role on Globe.

They don't hate each other. They are Wahhabi-es who hate both, specially Shia Muslims.
They don't accept anybody but themselves. Al-Qaeda comes from Wahhabies, who have changed Islam totally. The only thing they have of Islam is it's name.

Jealousy.
One group is killing more Israelis then the other. One group knows how to make bombs better.
A forecast, if they keep it up, people will turn on them like wild dogs.
