If you did give him money, would that be morally wrong?

How could you know he or she would buy drugs or alcohol unless you knew them personally? And if you knew them personally, wouldn't you feed them and clothe them and make sure that they got help?

It would not be morally wrong to give a homeless person money. HOWEVER, you need to examine those stereotypes that you are operating under. Just because people are homeless and dirty and act funny doesn't mean they're druggies. Perhaps you should work at a homeless shelter for a few months and see firsthand what it's all about.

Also, perhaps you should buy him/her something needed instead. One year, I went out and bought a whole lot of winter clothing (heavy coat, jeans, flannel shirts, undershirts, socks, underwear, boots) for an obnoxious, homeless man near my workplace. (This man would yell at people, get in their way, and he appeared to be a hopeless drunk) When he opened the box, he cried and shared the clothing with his homeless buddies.

A little compassion goes a long way.

Well in my case I don't think it would be wrong unless it would cause this person harm but then how would I know this at that time.

Not that I do Drugs but I do have a drink so actually I would be a good samaritian to this down and out person. Since Part of my money is going that way anyhow. And really that person is possibly living in a box or under a bridge or other conditions that most wouldn't want so it gives them a short escape of sorts...

It would be morally wrong to contribute to his drug habit or drinking problem, but there are ways around this. To insure that the money goes for something good, you could give gift certificates or, better still, buy lunch and share it with him at a park. Blankets are good, too.

It is never morally wrong to give money to a homeless person. But you must ascertain as to how he is going to make use of the money. If he is going to mis-spend it, as a morally right doing person your duty would be to transform him.

I would never give a homeless man or woman money BUT I have offered to buy them a slice of pizza. It's a good way to tell who the druggie/drunks are and who the desperate and hungry are.

Rather then give money to a person who is homeless, I go to the nearest fast food place and bring them back food. I also refer them to local food banks and shelters.

I would not give him money. Many people choose to be homeless because they prefer doing nothing and getting drunk or stoned everyday to working and being responsible. I will not enable them by giving them anything. Of course, I'm not saying ALL homeless are that way, but many are.

I rarely give anyone on the street money, but if they look hungry or thirty, I will go buy them something from McDonald's. One person did get angry with me once and said he could only use the money. I told him that I didnt have anymore, since I had just spent it on the food. (smile)

I guess unless I knew with 100% certainty that he was going to buy drugs with the money (like, I was giving the money to the drug dealer FOR him), I would not make the assumption that he was going to buy drugs with it...
