I see the ugliness as being the illusion. The more that I understand and see the less ugly things look to me, so I am not sure what you mean.
The closer to the light we become the more things start to make sense. The more they make sense the more beautiful everyone and everything becomes. You quickly understand that ugly was never more than a temporary misconception that you had been having.
Everyone should strive for the truth, there is nothing to fear but the loss of your confusion. How bad can that be?
I'm not sure one can say that they are actually on the road to enlightenment if they are still judging to the extent that they see ugliness in the world.
This would be highly unlikely.

PS. Are you the one who posed for the painting by Arthur Hughes. If so are you available for dinner on Saturday night. I have worshiped you from afar from the first moment that I saw this painting.

I think it takes a thin layer of denial just to get through the day. I mean, if we let ourselves fully understand how dangerous a motor vehicle was, none of us would drive or cross a street, you know?

Some people prefer the truth over what is shiny and happy. It would be well worth it for many.
For others, the truth could not be any uglier than what they are living in at the moment.

A little denial and delusion never hurt a soul, much. I heard it somewhere, what we become often is more about the delusion we set out to be, then finding ourselves in that journey.
