It depends a lot on the age of the puppy you get as well as how long it would have to be alone.
What I did with my last puppy (who was 9 weeks when I got him) was make sure he was walked in the morning before I left, and while he was young, he spent the day in an exercise pen, not a crate. The ex pen is 4 feet x 4 feet so he had some room. He had a blanket, toys and a couple of treats on one end, and lots of newspapers at the other. My kids were home from school by around 3:30 so it wasn't a really terribly long day for him.
Dogs don't like to mess where they live, and as amazing as it was to me, this puppy didn't pee in his pen by the time he was about 3 1/2 months old.
I like the ex pen because a crate doesn't give them any room to move, it's just too confining. If you have to leave a puppy for too many hours, is there someone who could come to your house to give him a little attention during the day?
You're aleady giving thought to your puppy's comfort so I'm sure he'll be just fineith whatever you work out.

Crate training is absolutely the best way to housebreak your new puppy....Be sure the crate is big enough that the puppy can stand and turn easily, but not so big that the puppy will have room to mess in part of it and sleep in the other part. It would be great if you had a neighbor to let the puppy out once during the day, but not totally necessary....The puppy might mess for the first day or so...but you have it trained in no time !! Good-Luck !!

Crate training of course- but a sectioned off room or exercise pen is fine too as long as you're committed to house training the puppy..Also depends on how long you're gone..I wouldn't leave a young puppy alone for more than 8 hours...that's rough on them. Maybe consider getting a full-grown dog if you're gone alot....

The best way to do this is to crate train them. This is NOT cruel.
To get the pup to go into the crate throw a small, soft treat into the back of the crate and then say the dogs name and then crate,IE pepper crate, then close the door, and tell him/her "good boy/girl", "good crate", Then give another treat through the door.
It will also help if you feed him/her in the crate.
My dogs when they want to get away from everything go and lay in their crate. I stopped closing the door after they got to be around the age of 2- 2 1/2 years old. It has become a safe haven/den to them. Good luck.

i am getting a puppy too, and i am worried about the same thing... for the first few months i am making the effort to come home for lunch and walk her, until i get her house broken and I am going to crate train her.... so that as she is older if I can not get home at any particular time she will be ok alone... I definately plan to crate train, but for the most part i am planning to put her in a little sectioned off area in my home where she has her play area and then a little area w/ newspapers/pee pee pads for accidents ... just a little area maybe 5x5feet or so... just enough to give her playtime while i am out, as well as sunshine, and see things outside so she gets accustomed to sounds and sights

I wouldn't buy an animal from a pet store. especially a puppy, pet shops get their dogs from BYBers & PUPPY MILLS & they are all poor quality. sometimes it is better to not get the things we think we want cause many times it is not what you thought it would be. my dream job was being a Vet. I am very glad I never went on that path. I would see nothing but sick, injured dogs. instead I went to dog training school & became a behaviorist & trainer specializing in aggression training in all types of aggression work & I learned how to groom & with my experience from training I specialized in dogs with behavioral problems.

I would get an older dog, like one year +, because puppies need more time and attention.
