Teach your dog the phrase "it's to early" and make him go back to bed, and when you get up then feed him. If you feed him at pretty close to the same time everyday he will get into a routine, and stop waking you up at 5:00 a.m.
That will work unless you have a spoiled rotten, demanding dog like I do, then she will just sit there and bark at you until you finally give in and give the brat what she want, just to shut her up. Then she can strut back into the room thinking 'I got her wrapped around my little paw'.
Good luck.

Try to keep the dog up longer at night, take it for a stroll or play a few rounds of catch. If this isn't something you are up for, then don't get up at five, refuse him the privilege of dragging you out of bed. Dogs are trainable and if you give in and wake up for him, then he's training you.

Glad I don't have this problem! It takes a forklift to get my dogs up before 8 AM!
But, you can just ignore him (he'll figure out that bugging you isn't getting him anywhere) or teach the command "Go to your spot" or "Go lay down". Even better is to teach a hand signal to go along with it so you don't even have to talk that early.

Try taking him for a late night walk if you can. It may take some time to become a habit.
Don't feed him at 5am. Start setting your alarm at a later time and then feed him right after the alarm goes off. He'll start to adjust to hearing the alarm means that he'll get fed.

don't get up with him... ignore him, after a while he will pick up that maybe he shouldn't be doing it... if he gets loud in the morning, get onto him... make it known that you don't want to do it and he can wait... Also, try feeding him later... not too late, then you'll be woken up because he has to go to the bathroom... maybe this will take away from some of his hunger in the morning... and then set a good time to feed him when it is convenient for you and he will eventually pick up that it is the new feeding time...
Hope all goes well and good luck...

well one way is to set a special feeding time. if you wake up at eight then feed him every morning at eight.eventually he will understand he isn't going to get food before then.

ignore him intil you think it is appropriate for him (slowly), train him to get up at the approproate time, you may also get him more active and keep him up later, so he sleeps more,
my dogs used to do that to me in the mornings, but i had to get up anyhow, so i considered it my personal alarm.... but when i did not need to I just ignored them for an hr, they took the hint, and went to sleep until i got up.
