My daughter has an early 90's model Maxima and every time it rains or the car is wet, when she accelerates the car starts choking out like it isn't getting gas. It has stopped completely on her a couple of times. The first time it happened we changed the fuel filters but that didn't seem to help.

It runs fine and she can go anywhere when the conditions are dry, this only happens when the car is wet.

We have had several people look at it and no one seems to be able to figure it out.

Please Help!!!

take a spray cleaner bottle and fill it with tap water best done in the evening so you can see sparks spray all around the plugs, wires, distributor cap under that cover ignition coil under coil cover, coil wire, Dist cap cover has a tab and pulls up ignition cover has two flaps and two push in tabs to open the flaps just do the front flap pull up. When you find the culprit you notice misfire roughness and it might die. If you find ignition wires worn out replace all the parts at one time dist. cap, rotor, plugs and plug wires. good luck

I believe that your cap and rotor are bad and your wires that attach to the coil and then go to the cap and from the cap to the spark plugs may also be bad. There are two spring clips on the cap and they just snap off with a screwdriver. Leave the wires on and look inside the cap. If you see lines inside the cap, these are track marks and when moisture enters they start to short out and cause engine misfire or stall or no start. To check the ign cables, start the engine and use a hand sprayer then start to wet the wires. If they are bad you will hear a cracking sound. replace as needed. A word of good advice. Use only Nissan parts. I've replaced many after market parts as they went bad very quickly. Don't waste your money. And if you do it yourself, replace one wire at a time.
I am hopeful that this fixes your problem, Mark

Your problem is in the ingition system. Does this car have a distributor? They used to call the newer system electronic ignition.

If you have a distributor then get a new distributor cap, and rotor. from the store. Autozone has them for about 25 bucks.

What happens is water gets in under the cap and is trapped. so the points get wet and there you have it.

Spray all the wire connections around the engine, distributor cap with WD40,and if you can check the fuel pump wires at the fuel tank spray them also. The WD in WD40 stands for water desplacement,it works well at removeing moisture and procting from mosture Good luck.
