According to Islamic Scholars, something which causes harm to the body is haram. So with all the proof at hand, I should say that smoking is haram according to Islamic teachings.

Now the funny part:some Islamic scholars are known to have smoked hashish!

haram=not permissible according to islamic law

to answer the question. it is haram because it's a form of slow suicide because of the harmful effects it has on the body. you're deliberately putting toxins in the body that cause cancer and harmful side effects that can cause death. so yup it is haram.

If you mean "is smoking harmful" you bet your
life it is. Doctors that have to remove lungs because
of cancer will affirm it. The inside of a lung looks
like a smokehouse, all dark gray and toasted. Not
good. You don't want cancer so give up the smoking
now. You'll be glad you did.

This verse means that Your body is a temple unto God, and when you do things to your body that causes harm to it, you are harming the temple of God, you are defiling the temple.
