Kabbalah is scientology-lite for people who only want to dabble in cults.

We have Kabbalah services at our synagogue several times a year. I love the service itself, but I don't study Kabbalah because it's much too mystical. Been there -- done that as a Christian. Non-Jews who study Kabbalah are doing themselves a disservice by not learning Judaism before reading "about" Kabbalah, just as rosends says.

what you have read is "about kabbalah" or is a false kaballah. True kaballah is a mystical thread within orthodox Judaism that requires students to be married, male and over 40 yrs old, and have already dedicated their lives to the study of the Jewish biblical and exegetical texts. Kaballah is, in one sense, an advanced mode of textual explication tapping into a deeper sense of meaning. It is also a mystical/spiritual way of getting a handle on God and man and the relationship of both to each other and universe. But it requires serious grounding in Judaism and many years of preparation.

Kabbalah is not a philosophy or theosophy. Kabbalah is work to be done. The kabbalists of the past were people of action, not people of theory or philosophy. They were constantly traveling from town to town, giving charity, and assisting people in creating better lives for themselves.

I've studied it a bit in the context of ritual/ceremonial magic, since it's more or less the basis for most ritual magic. It's not a great source of interest for me, but from what I know of it, it's interesting and effectively laid out.
