I actually bought a kit that helped with this. It is a clear toilet seat cover that has room for you to put kitty litter in it, after a while, you punch the middle out of it and remove the kitty litter and then after awhile, you can remove the whole thing. It was very easy, took about 2 weeks or so for my cat. I'm sure it'll make a difference depending on the age of the cat and all.

Takes time and a lot of patience. I hope you have an extra toilet.

1) place a kitty-litter box on the toilet. When used remove the lid.
2) after a while you put a bowl in your toilet with the litter. After a while remove the litter.
3) remove the bowl.

4) Not you only have to learn your cay to flush.

There is a special cat pan you place under the toilet seat. When the cat gets use to using the toilet to relieve himself you remove the pan. The droppings will then drop in the toilet and you don't have to buy litter anymore. You just flush when he has gone. And maybe clean the toilet if he missed.

Now if you have to go real bad and the cat is in the can. You have to wait. ha ha

This is what I did. Once they poo, take the poo and put it in the toilet together with your cat. Do it everytime they poo. Initially it will be quite tough but eventually the cat will definitely poo in the toilet.
