hi, i am 24 i went and had private orthodontic treatment a week ago. i hated the thought of braces in my mouth when it was suggested to me about 10 years ago, but decided to get it done. i got into the chair and began feeling nervous but managed to stay composed. i paid a deposit of 750 0f 3000 pounds, alot of money i know. meanwhile, at home my mouth felt very big as i only have a small mouth and small teeth and dont have a full set either. ie couple of adults did not come through. my problem is complex as my incisor grew out the roof of my mouth instead of its correct position. anyway the past week has been pure hell, all i could think of was having them out they were so uncomfortable, i had low self esteem, could not do anything, work, sleep, eat, talk, everything i had took for granted was taken anyway.i got very depressed and very weak, cried alot, i lost weight, i went everyday to see the ortho. everybody at the orthos told me it would get better and to persevere but it didnt.

anyway after about the 5th day and a talk with the practise manager who was quite straight faced as were all the receptionists and other nurses apart from one sympathetic dental nurse. the ortho seemed to treat me like a nuisence too as i kept going back as was not happy because i could not eat properly, my bottom tooth was knocking against the wire clip which was moving the incisor across. my bottom tooth was in between incisor and one of my front teeth, tricky problem eh? i could not shut my mouth fully because of 2 big lumps of glue on my back bottom molars. he said it was only until the tooth moved but that could have taken months, i did not want to be living on soup all those months, i was fed up of not being able to eat properly or drink. i had just decided enough was enough. my family all said i should have them out as they saw how miserable i was so i did. trouble is my incisor seems to have moved eating seems bad again, i am told it may move back, stay or move somewhere else!

i have now lost that little bit of self confidence i had and i am not a confident person so thought having this done would help me but instead it has ruined me and i dont know if i will ever be the same. it has been 2 days since they came out and i just wish i had never of upset my teeth, i could eat fine before, i just wanted them to look better and be a bit more comfortable instead i feel extremely down, i may have the tooth out as alot have suggested i did, in the first place as many thought my teeth were not that bad. i had to go back again yesterday to have the residue of the glue removed which made my teeth rough and my toungue sore, i cannot speak terribly well and worst of all i am 500 pounds down which is like a months wages for me. maybe i should have gone through with it but in doing that i would have gotten more and more down and weak as i could not eat i just hope i can return to normal and go back to work soon. this has been an extremely tramatic experience!

in response to trudi, they r sending me 250 pounds back and keeping 500 pounds for all the visits, materials etc i was told they were good braces, clear ones on the bottom and white ones on the top which wouldnt stain, yet when i used the disclosing tablet it made the brackets all pink and the pink that didnt get taken off, the ortho had to take off himself. anyway i was told the wires he was using were clever because hot drinks made them move quicker and cold would make them looser. i drank alot of water as i could not drink much else and deffinately could not eat anything as i was biting against the wire clip and not on my teeth. i still cannot eat properly as the tooth has moved. my mouth was seriously rejecting the foreign body in me and am thinking that invisalign might be the only solution. btw i am also on the nhs waiting list but i am told the metal braces are even worse. i need to seek advice from somewhere, i can not settle now and even need sleeping tablets from the worry.

I'm not too sure what to say to you! If it was me id ask for my deposit back ( I'm not sure if you would get it though ) then write a letter of compaint to the practise manager and also send a copy to your local health authority. Then go somewhere else. You where going to spend alot of money on your teeth, and you would want to be happy with the treatment and the standard of care you receive. I'm a dental nurse but only in a dentists not in an Ortho surgery so i don't know the procedure. I know having braces can make you teeth a bit tender of a few days but what you've experienced sounds a bit extream. Please go somewhere else, don't let this put you off. Good luck.
I feel so sorry for you, if you can email me the area you live in i know of some very good Orthodontists, at the end of the day you might live the other end of the country!!! But like i said go and see another Ortho, you said you've lost some of you confidence, just think of the confidence you will have when you get your teeth sorted out, you wont be able to stop smiling!!!!!!!!

I too have had braces, i was advised when i was approx 14 that i needed them but i had this strong thought that no one would want me to be their girlfriend if i had braces, however 2 years later when i was 16 i decided that in the long run it would be better for me and i had them fitted. BEST THINK I EVER DID. I hated them at first and refused to smile with my mouth open, like you i cried all the time, gradually i got used to them, no one treated me any different, i still had just as much male attention and forgot i had them half the time. Honestly stick with it, when you eventually have them taken out you will look back and wonder why you were ever thinking about having them out after one week. You must have thought about this thoroughly before deciding to pay £3000 therefore deep down you know that the decision to have them fitted was right.

Usually it just takes us a month to get an upper incisor out of crossbite. Granted, yours may have been worse than the cases I have seen.
The clear brackets are bigger and harder to work on than the stainless steel ones. So the metal ones ARE a better option.
There was really no need for you to use a disclosing agent if you knew that you were brushing well.
You will have a harder time moving that incisor with Invisalign. We don't recommend Invisalign for harder cases. It does not work as well as traditional braces.
Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

I'm 27 and have had fixed braces on my top and bottom teeth for almost 18 months now.
When they were fitted I was devastated, much like yourself I was unable to eat, talk, or sleep properly and my self esteem dropped even further.
But after a couple of weeks I got used to eating and speaking in public situations etc again and my confidence started to come back as I stopped feelin so conscious of the metalwork.
My braces come off in December and while I can't wait, I'm so glad I took this step.
Stay with it, and it'll all be worth it in the end!
Good luck!

my dear friend....i know that orthodontic treatment is not actually a very comfortable treatment(after all you have braces in your mouth)...but think about it,the whole world gets it done...so why will you have any problem in wearing it(apart from the fact that you will have slight discomfort initially but then you are not even gonna notice it....heck,my 11 year old cousin got it done and she never even realized that there was something in her mouth although her treatment was of 2 years duration...and believe those braces are not gonna harm your mouth in any way,,,so get over it and gt it done, afterall its best for your teeth

i had braces and it took a lot more then a week to get used to them, it took a while until brushing my teeth was just a daily task, the same with eating. point is, everybody feels incredibly uncomfortable for a lot more then a week. but don't worry it goes away and in the end it feels great to get those damn things taken off.

i heard about this happening once before, its very rare.. but having braces can make some people very ill. In the case i heard about the dentist decided to slow down the process of moveing the patients teeth and this did help.. but maybe braces just arn't for u..

they are painful at first your mouth aches, teeth hurt and you can't talk properly, things do get easier when worn for awhile,
its along prosess but the results are worth a little discomfort
