Get him the clamshell gameboy advance. It doesn't have any little pieces like the new dual screen one and it's pretty durable.

My suggestion would be "The Great Outdoors". There are an unlimited amount of games, and they are all free, or nearly free. My two-year-old son just loves it. But, if you really do need a system for the car, I would suggest the Gameboy Advanced. It's cheap, and pretty easy for kids to figure out.

None...a 2 year old needs more than a game boy. My 12 year old is borderline antisocial because he had a game boy stuck in his face at the age of 4. I wish his idiot father never gave it to him. He said it would help eye hand coordination...maybe it did, but he had lots of trouble in school. Not with academics,he is very bright despite the gane boy, but I also got him educational games instead of shoot em up games. He has a harder time with getting along with other kids. Send them out to play, in the car play games like I spy, count the out of state plates, sing, put their music in the tape player...don't make the same mistakes!

Well they make the leap frog learning toys in a handheld game form now i believe. But id stick with somethign inexpensive since he is only 2. Maybe looked for a used gameboy or something on ebay. Theres probably a high % chance it will get broken since kids dont know about value and all that stuff :) This way you dont spend too much and he can enjoy it while its working :)

There are so many things that you could give a 2 year old that will enhance his mind and develop his social skills, I don't think a gaming system is one of them. I have to question today's society that encourages anti-social behavior in children as young as 2 years old. Take the time instead and talk to the child, encourage his imagination, help him develop social skills that don't involve gaming.

There's no way I'd let a 2 y/o have a game system....but whatever floats your boat. If you want portable, get Game Boy Advance. Don't spend $200 on a PSP for a 2 y/o.

I got my girls V-smile. It's relatively cheap, and all the games are educational. If you have a dvd player in your car, you can hook it up in there as well. Plus, I believe they make a portable version. It's just a joystick and few buttons. I checked many websites, and this game system always scored high.

Buy a used Game Boy (the old one)... it's cheap, used games can be bought for 2 to 5 dollars. A two year old will destroy it anyway, so why spend a lot of money?

your child is a media addict. keep him away from these devices. as a teacher, I see way too many kids hooked on these things, and in school if they don't have them they complain they are bored. they become angry and agitated and don't want (or can't focus) to do schoolwork. they are so obsessed with the games its sick. they get hooked on these devices to entertain them at every moment of their time, so at school when asked to sit they have no idea how to channel thier energy. play I-Spy in the car. look for the different colors cars. count the train cars. heck, it's called teaching them to be better communicaters. that's the #1skill needed for school success, and it can only be taught at home in the begining years. You miss it, and it is difficult to teach a child in school.

V-Tech makes a little portable game system, besides the orange/purple V-Smile for a home TV.
