I've only been bitten once and it was by a dog who was in pain. Totally my own fault because I know a dog in pain will bite. He had gotten his foot caught and was screaming - so like an idiot, I ran out there, right up to him to help and he bit me. I didn't take a second to remember that I should have taken a blanket with me to throw over him so he couldn't bite me. He got his foot out by himself and limped over to me for comfort!
But it's different when you're bitten as a kid - it's naturally going to make you a little uneasy around dogs. Since you're a dog lover, I hope you've been able to get over it. If not, there are things you can do to help but by your question, I don't know if you're ok with dogs now or not.

I was bitten while trying to pet a dog while he was eating. I was very young probably 3 or 4. He just missed my eye! I have an almost invisible mark there to this day. It never seemed to affect my love for dogs or animals. :)
My husband has been bitten on his pants leg by a little mean mutt in the neighborhood that doesn't like anyone walking on the sidewalk. The second time the little mutt came charging the owner ran after it and my husband said to make sure the dog doesn't do it again bc 3x and you're out - then he'd make a report. He hasn't seen the little mutt since!

I have been rescuing abused, abandoned, and neglected animals for over 25 years, and YES I have been bitten. When I was 9 and went to rescue my very first dog I made the mistake of trying to take a bone away from it, and it bit me. I was in the hospital for 11 with blood poisoning, and after that I got the dog back in good health, and placed him in a loving home. This time sticks out in my memory because it was the only time I had to stay in the hospital from a dog bite. I also got bit when I was about 3 or 4, and a puppy jumped up on me and bit me in the arm, and broke its tooth off in my arm. We called that dog Hair Bear, because he was as big as a bear. I loved that dog till the day he died. I have been bitten a total of 5 times in all the years I have been doing this. I still love animals, I still rescue animals, and I probably will until the day I die. Your welcome.

Yes, I have been bitten. I was trying to break up a fight between my dog and a neighbor dog (both large breeds and by the way, don't do this--let the dogs settle it on their own) and got bit by one or both of them. It was kind of hard to tell who was doing the biting. I wound up with some nasty puncture wounds, but none bad enough that I had to go to the hospital. I was just real shaken up.
Dogs bite. They don't have hands and they don't speak English and biting is a way to get their point across if no one is paying attention to what they're trying to say. Pay close attention to what a dog is saying and you probably won't get bitten. Unless you are an idiot like me and get in the middle of a dog fight.

I agree with tlctreecare....the little dogs are the ones that you have to be the most cautious with. The worst bites I have seen others receive were from Toy breeds.
I have been a trainer for 35 yrs. I have only been bitten once...I was 10 yrs. old, in my Mom's car, riding along while she delivered a collie to its owner after a stay in our kennel. The collie became territorial of the back seat that we were sharing and pinned me to the door. When I couldn't move any further away, it bit me in the face leaving a scar over my right eye.
I hold dogs for a groomer on a regular basis and have had some close calls, but luckily none connected in that situation.

I had (and still have) a love of animals. I used to bring stray dogs home (usually dragging them by the collar), to see if we could keep it.
One day when I was 5 I went to see if my friend up the road was home and she wasn't, then I noticed the next door neighbors dog- Rocky (border collie cross), so I went over to play with him.
We were having a great time- next thing I remember seeing this HUGE face above me, knocking me down. I got up, told the dog he was being mean, and that I was going home. While I was walking, I remember putting my hand up to my face because it hurt, and when I put my hand down it was covered in blood. Of course at five you think, "it's ok, mum will put a sticky on it". Mum opened the door and nearly fainted. Turns out the dog missed taking my eye by about a centimetre, and he had taken most of the right side of my face off.
It's ok though, I healed quite quickly, now I'm in my twenties and the scar looks like a laugh line.
I studied Animal Care, have worked at vet clinics and have owned 3 dogs since. No deterrant is good enough to keep me away. :)
Oh, and the dog wasn't put down, but went to an animal behaviouralist. He was never tied up out the front again, and I went to see him afterwards so that i could be reassured that the dog wasn't nasty or viscious. He was a really nice dog- just easily excited as he was young and it was only a "play bite".

No, but I was attacked by a german shepherd. It was my uncle's. I was about 6 yrs. old. I drew a picture of the dog and when I was done I wanted to show it to the dog so I did. The dog must not have like the picture I drew or something but it attacked me! So I haven't like german shepherds since. But I still like most dogs.
And about a yr. ago my 11yr. old brother Zachary was attacked and bitten on the ear by a labrador. It was terrible! We took him to the hospital and they put some bandages on his ear and in about a week or so you couldn't even tell that he was bitten. I can't believe I am typing this but on the way to the hospital I fainted. I guess because I was so scared that something would happen to his ear. Now Zachary is a little more cautious about petting and being around dogs that he doesn't know very well. But I can understand his feelings.

As a vet tech/pet sitter, I've been bitten many animals, both domestic and exotic. (It comes with the job)
I've been bitten by dogs on several occasions, some requiring a trip to the ER. The worst dog bite was from a small poodle who jumped in my face and bit me right through my top lip. Over the years, I've learned to jump out of the way faster. I've also learned to read a dog's body language and from experience, I know what kind of dogs are most likely to bite and to be extra cautious....kinda like breed profiling.
By far, the worst bites have been from cats though.
I've got lotsa scars, but I wear them with pride!

Yes - twice over the years by friends dogs. The first time, I was about 8 years old and a friend & I were riding our bikes slowly in circles in her driveway talking to each other. They had an old Collie, and it was laying in the center of the circle. It suddenly got up, ambled over & when I went to pass it bit me in the leg! They had it put to sleep a few months later because of deteriorating health issues. The second time (I was in my late 20's), a friend got a year old German Shepherd from a co-worker who had it in a trailer park that didn't allow big dogs & got caught. He took it as his German Shepherd had just died a few months before, & he was ready for another. The dog was kind of strange from having been mostly isolated hiding in the trailer. He would be fine, then his hair would go up on his back & you would have to walk away from him slowly. Well, I was playing ball with him one day and he went from hair up to lunging and biting my hand VERY quickly! It turned out he had bad blisters on his paw pads, and was irritable because of that. His pads were so soft, still like an 8 week old pups, as he had been on carpet his whole life with brief trips out to potty. Now, he spent most his time on gravel & concrete. It took about 6 months, but he finally settled into a fairly decent dog. I never fully trusted him, though.
I am an animal lover, too. I know we must all remember they ARE animals, not humans in fur suits, and behave as animals. The more time we spend with them, the likelier we are going to have some incidents like these. But the good way outweighs the bad!

No I haven't. But, I have been bitten by a mean cat. My brother got bit by my uncles mean dog twice and now he doesn't like big dogs except Chase my dads dog. My brother still lives at home, so I guess it is his dog too. My fiancee got bit by our dog Oscar. He is a mini dachshund. I dont' know why he did that. I still think about it trying to figure out why he did that to him. I live with my fiancee and we got this dog together. So it is both of ours. So it is not like Oscar doesn't know him or isn't used to him. I guess something just snapped and then he snapped.
