my kitten already has a small scratching post, but he's kind of outgrown it, he towers over the top when he's stretched out, and also id like to get another for the bedroom so he stops tearing up the bottom of our blankets...What is a nice, "fun", inexpensive post for kittens??

Our 11 month old kitten scratchs on all kinds of surfaces. He has a kitty "tree" condo thing which he loves. He has the cardboard Alpine scratchers. He likes to scratch on vertical and horizontal things. So he also has taken a liking to our leather sofa and expensive rocking chair.
I'd suggest giving him several options. We just bought the SoftPaws nail covers for him bc he is spending most of the day clawing & scratching.
Even a chunk of real wood will work if you know someone that will cut you a piece. Have part with the bark - and part with the bark stripped off.
Toy wise, get some of the light ping-pong type balls they can bat around in the shower or tub when you're not home. Otherwise throw one in a large cardboard box.
Our cat's fav toy of all times is DaBird - it's a feather on a string attached to a plastic pole. He goes bonkers for it and it's good exercise for him.
We also got him the Cat Crazies (Pet Mate) and they're like the plastic rings on milk jugs - but better. He flips them around, bats them around like a hockey puck and just loves them. They're about $2.99 a pack (3 in the pack).
We are going to get this also, since it looks like great material and an Vet invented it:

My cats don't really like posts per se. They like those corrigated cardboard style scratches. They are angled and have a toy in the middle. They are cheap, you can flip the the cardboard over when it's destroyed, come with free catnip and are refillable. Can't think of anything that would be better.
Here's a link for the alpine scratcher. Cat's tend to like the angled ones rather than the kind that lies flat. You can find this brand and others at many pet stores. http://www.cosmicpet.com/detail.asp?col=1&id=2

If you want, make your on scratching post!
Get 6 pieces of wood... the bottom piece should be longer than the sides.
And make sure there's a top!
Use wood-glue and screws (I have done this before) to attach the wood together. Then go to a craft store and buy pieces of carpet, that you attach to the sides and top of the scratching post. Attach it with glue.
To make your cat use the new and bigger scratching post, put catnip or a treat on the top of it. Then remove your old scratching post and your cat will forget about it because you now have this GORGEOUS scratching post!
You can get the wood/glue in craft stores.
Good luck with your kitty!

Cats need a post that is at least 3-feet tall in order to stretch and get the full benefit of the post. Honestly, unless you have just pennies to your name, it is worth spending a bit more for a high-quality post. I had a Felix Katnip post that lasted 10 years (and I have 5 cats!). Check these sites for the best post out there.

We got our cats a real simple one when we adopted them and they still love it. It's only about a foot high, and consists of 2 boards that come together at an angle (each board is about 18 inches long)The base is carpeted, as is the one of the boards, the other side is this sisal cord/twine. They seem to love both textures, and in particular the cord seems really good for digging their claws into. It cost me less than $20 at my local store.
One cat lays on back and scratches it that way. The other leans over it and uses it that way. Both love it.

You'll find the best cat trees at local cat shows. And the best prices too! The pet stores totally rip you off. Do an online search for cat trees or check eBay. But seriously, your best bet is to attend a cat show in your area. They have the BEST stuff for cats. Check out the show schedules at www.cfainc.org and www.tica.org. Good luck.

You can buy them all over at pet stores but the cheapest way to make it your self. Put "cat tree" into your browser and plans from simple to most elaborate will come up.

This is one of the most elaborate I have ever seen for sale. Most cats would be happy with something a little less fancy but it will give you some ideas.
