Because some people are afraid that if they accept others with different beliefs they are accepting that their faith is not perfect for everyone.
There is no ONE faith for everyone but A faith for each individual to choose, even if that faith is not to believe.

I think many people (most?) do accept people of different beliefs. The extremists are the problem and they seem to be becoming more vocal. Orthodoxy is what leads to fanaticism -- there is only one way, the right path, and everyone else is wrong. Others don't speak as a group and therefore are less influential. Perhaps "others" should unite as some kind of a group including both athiests and those of faith.

I believe "obstinate" is a harsh word but let's say a little less knowledge of ones beliefs causes then to act out or shun others who believe differently from them.

If you've been taught from very early childhood that there is one way to believe and that all other ways are evil, that people who do not believe this way will spend eternity being tortured for their sin, and you see someone who does not hold that belief - then you see them as evil and think it is loving to save them.
If that other person says you are wrong and tries to show you errors in your thinking, then it is as though you were fighting evil itself.
Dealing with people who have this kind of belief is both irritating and tragic. They mean well, but come off as shoving their religion down your throat. Tragic because they have been taught that to think for yourself is evil. Irritating because they are relentless in their illogical arguments and insulting in their self-righteousness.
I don't know of any way to free them from the indoctrination that forbids them to consider any option but to repeat what they were taught and to quote from the source that is supposed to be from God himself.
Unfortunately, many others believe what they have been taught as Truth-Through-Reason and are just as closed minded. In one way, the extremists are amusing when they bait and rant at each other. In another way, it's very sad that their words are only expressions of antagonism instead of understanding.

Because all too often, those people believe that they are "RIGHT" and therefore should have a say in how YOU and all others must live and believe...it's sad really...I personally don't care what you believe in as long as live by your beliefs, and don't attempt to force them on me...to do otherwise to be a hypocrit.

I think part of it is just a normal human thing--people fear what they don't know. And part of it comes from stereotypes. And part of it comes from the fact that major religions literally describe others who hold different beliefs as evil.

are you the kind of person who talks about his beliefs a lot because if you are saying something people have every right to disagree with you. Keep your beliefs to yourself!

It seems very hard to respect someone who doesn't believe what you believe, let alone respect someone who believes that you are wrong! Religion divides, even though it preaches unification. One of the saddest paradoxes of mankind. Klingons and Borg will never be brothers.

On a personal level, I don't get it either. My idea of a good time is hearing what other people believe and why. I think it's fascinating.

they believe that their beliefs are the only true beliefs and that they will not fulfill thier religious duties if they do not try to save everyone.
And this goes for most religions.
