Repetition of kata is just of way to put the movements into muscle memory, you will most likely never actually do the kata to defend yourself , but the movements from the kata will come automatically.

Kata isn't really used for a defensive tactic, though it is far from useless.
Kata helps you gain comfortability with forms, through it you learn the fundamentals of a technique or set of techniques. It also helps develop muscle memory so that you can chain combinations of techniques together. It also strengthens your form and helps your stances.
In theory yes the things you learn from Kata will help you defend yourself, in many of the arts you are doing Kata as if you are fighting an imaginary foe. So it is quite possible to use a kata as means of defense, though real fighting doesn't have a set dynamic like Kata, though the reactions and techniques you use during Kata will come in handy.
Hope that helps you some.

Kata (and their equivalent in other arts) are extremely important. They help the student to learn and practise correct techniques and stances. After all, if you can't perform a technique correctly, it won't be much use in a fight.
Think of it this way: Imagine a martial art is a musical instrument. Kata is the "theory" of the martial art. If you don't know theory when playing an instrument, you won't be able to play a tune (or spar correctly).
Kata were invented in the Orient because the law there was "An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth". Students could not practise their techniques on other people, so they had to practise them against imaginary opponents.
Kata can't be used in a fight, but they will help you to defend yourself.

I actualy talked about this in another answer so here it goes...
Kata is not meant for only using in a fight. It won't work that way, but it does have another purpose. It is meant for training and conditioning and teaching different ways of combining moves together. There is a fighting definition to kata that is called Bunki. This is the explination of who's attacking you and what each move is used for.
Those who think Kata is usless just don't understand it. Kata is done with deep stances and exagerated blocking moves. The over exagerated blocks will help you to better understand and use real blocks in fighting and the deep stances will strengthen your legs and train you to keep your back streight and head up while sparring. The hard Kata punches will help you to find the right timing to throw accurate powerful punches.
This all takes time and will come out in your sparring.
Kata is kind of like meditation. It may look silly to those who don't understand it but once you do it for a while you will see that it is very important.
For the rest of you... Don't scoff what you don't understand, it just makes you look stupid!

From my expereince, Kata gives you a way to practice. Your defensive techniques should also be within the kata. It teaches your body a way to move to protect itself. You become more fluid, more sure, and hones skills. You will never break into a full kata to defend yourself, you will use parts. When I stopped doing kata and training I found myself not as quick, precise, or as fast. Kata helps with all of this. You still need to spar, and train your phyciscal skills in other ways, but Kata helps.

Kata is Karate. Karatedo a martial art and kata is the form in which it is transmitted from one generation to the next. If you want to take self-defense lessons, kickboxing etc. that have no kata, that's up to you. However if there's no kata, it's not karate.

My opinion is, Kata is worthless. If you really need to work on kata to get comfort with the style then that style is too complex.
