Praying is a form of communication for us to God. He tells us in the Bible to ask and it shall be given seek and you shall find. He wants us to make the first move to realize we need him. If he just did what ever we needed when ever we needed would you rely on him for strength or would you become spoiled and think you just had a great life and did not need anyone. If you are a parent do you give your children everything they need right away all the time? If you do you have spoiled children. Who will grow up thinking the world is going to give them whatever they want. If you raise your children to come to you for help when they are in need this teaches humbleness and compassion for their fellow man. You must first need something in order to be able to give something. People who never want for anything do not understand the person who is hungry or cold or lonely. Because they themselves have never experienced it. God is a our father and he teaches us to come to him for help and the more you go to him in prayer the stronger you become in your faith that he is right there walking beside you every step of the way.

It's because God wants us to ask Him to show that we know we need His grace and love and mercy for everyday. In praying, we also strengthen our relationship and trust in Him. So pray when you can, for only good can come out of it.

Praise be to God in the highest!

That is a mis-nomer. God knows we need food, water, clothing shelter, relationships. Heck, even I know that.

But then we have free will and I need a vacation, and He is not aware of that.

So what is it to pray, as defined in the Bible?
Ask: decide what you want or need.
Seek: reach down in your soul and figure out how to get it.
Knock: go get it by doing the things that you need to do.

If you are truly spiritual, you will try to discern spiritual guidance at each of these steps.

Prayer is communication with God through Jesus. To pray for yourself is o.k., but selfish. Pray for the ones you love and care about. Pray for others in need of guidance. Yes, God knows what we need. But the Bible says pray one for another!

Oh well that is something to remind us of who we are and where we belong to. Usually when we are too happy we forget that there is something greater above us; GOD. Hence praying and asking reminds us that and tells us that we are nothing without God's help, we may think we can do anything but not without God's will.

My 2 year old talks to me all the time, even though I already know what she needs. Why do you think that is? :)

Yeah, because we have a relationship, she and I; and even though I already know what she needs, and in all honesty, what she's thinking about, those conversations are very important to me too. Wouldn't miss 'em for the world :)

We pray to God not to inform Him of what we need, but to remind ourselves of our needs and that God is there to listen to us and love us.

Prayer is the expression of our relationship with God.

We pray are the act of communicating with GOD. Yes, HE knows before we asked but HE wants us to say it out.

For example, a little child saw his/her neighbor has toy. This child wants a toy. The child parents would like he/she to ask.
