Before I give a direct answer, let me draw your attention to several comments that have been made in answer to your question.
"I don't support any war...I think the best offence is a good Defense”
"I have mix feelings about that war because I am not sure what America is fighting for"
"I feel sorry for the troops and a war that is totally ridiculous just as Vietnam was"
"I don't support any war unless it is the very last resort”
"We all know that the intel leading up to this invasion was dead wrong and we should have acknowledged it from the very start and held back."
"Support the war? that's hard to answer!
Support the troops - Definetely"
Every American should look to their feet in shame for the soft, unprincipled, apathetic country we have become in the years since WWII.
To those who "don't understand" why we are there and what is going on---do you think the very least you could do in support of those young men and women who have DIED while you eat chips and watch T.V. would be to educate yourself on why we are there and what is going on? Aren't you ashamed that you, seemingly without conscience, can ignore the war and its reasons while you let others DIE to protect your way of life?
To those who "...support our troops, not the war". There is no such option. Here is a real news flash for you. Our troops are made up of 100% VOLUNTEERS. These men and women are trained to do two things---break things and kill people, period. This means that the "troops" you claim to support volunteered to go to Iraq to kill people and break things. Please tell me how it is you can support them without supporting the war. Isn't that a nice easy way of, again, ignoring the war and the efforts of every man and woman involved in it? You people seem to be under the false impression that these poor folks are over there doing things they don't believe in just because George Bush ordered it and, given the choice, they would agree with you and come home. You could not be further from the truth. They believe in the war, the reasons for it and take great pride in keeping the rest of us safe from what they live on a daily basis.
To answer the question directly, the war is just and right. The Islamo fascists would not care if we were in Iraq or Afghanistan or sitting back home----they declared war on us many years ago. They have repeatedly proclaimed their goal to KILL all the infidels (that's every non-Muslim man woman and child). They have no interest in holding hands and singing songs, they have no points to negotiate. Their goal is singular in purpose and not up for negotiation---kill the infidels.
If our apathy doesn't allow us to recognize just how dangerous these times are, we are destined to be destroyed. Think about WWII and for how long Europe appeased Hitler, tried to negotiate with him and appeased him some more. Do you recall from your history lessons what the result was? The result was he took their countries one by one. He too had no interest in negotiating and was singular in purpose.
We all tend to think as if these terrorists think as we do---they don't. They think with a 5th century mentality. Have you ever thought how odd the verbiage was from various quotes of their so-called leaders? You know, when they say something like "The Americans will cower at the feet of Allah and tremble with fear from our just God" It always seems really corny and odd---I used to think it was perhaps because of the translation. It is not---it is because they live in the 5th century and that is how people talk. These people will kill their family members, their children, innocent civilians, saw heads off, use chemical weapons on their own people, torture and maim for pleasure , etc.,etc.,etc.. These are not the actions of a rational group who can be appeased or negotiated with. These are complete barbarians who will not be deterred by anything other than a bomb or a bullet.
The faster Americans realize this and the faster the rest of the civilized world realizes this, the faster we can come together with a common goal and wipe this scourge from the face of the earth. Those brave men and women who are fighting on out behalf understand this and deserve everyones unabashed support of THEIR ACTIONS not the meaningless support of those who claim to support the troops but not their purpose.
The answer to part two is that Saddam should be executed after his trials.

I absolutely support the war in Iraq. My husband has been there almost a total of 3 yrs now. Contrary to popular beliefs the majority of the soldiers do agree with why they are there.
Personally I could care less if he had WMD, he needed to be removed and if thats how they had to do it, so be it.
As for his punishment, I think he should be drug out into the middle of Baghdad, and hung. If he felt that was a fitting punishement for his citizens then, he should suffer the same consequences.
The troops can't leave just yet, if so it would only cause more damage. It would just open the doors for a coup. I'd rather they stayed just a little longer and made sure everything was right, as opposed to having to go back to settle a civil war.

Look guys, the bottom line is this. There IS evil in the world, the only reason we havn't been attacked here in America again is because this war has got most of the terrorists on the run and in hiding. They havn't had a chance to relax and begin plotting another attack, and hopefully they are not going to have that chance. What people don't realize is that regardless if we "bring the troops home" or not is that the US is still going to have 10s of thousands of special operations and CIA operatives in these areas for many years to come. So while we may bring back the "main forces" to satisfy the media and the left of America, there is always going to be a strong US military and counterintelligence presence in these areas thwarting as much terrorism as possible. Bring home the troops if you want, but rest assured that those aren't the troops doing the real dirty work in the middle east.

Well, I was a soldier and in Iraq in 2003, so I have to say that the reasons that we're there are not understood by the general population. What the media portrays is not untrue, just biased. Yes, I support the reasons we're there. The Iraqi people are good people, and most of them support us too. Believe it or not, soldiers work closely with Iraqi's daily. However, the troops cannot come home now because we'll let the Iraqi people down. Right now, they are defenseless and depend on our protection. When the Iraq military can protect themselves then the troops can come home. As for Saddam he should get life in prison. As for what we should do next, we should stay on course. If other countries would just chip in some troops, this would be over soon. But that is not the case, so US soldiers have to stick to the course, keep fighting, soon it will be over.

I was in the military, serving in initial invasion of Afghanistan, and I didn't support the war in Iraq at the beginning. We needed to go elsewhere to have a bigger impact on terrorism networks. That said, I understand the reasons why we went, because we (along with the UN and numerous countries worldwide) thought Saddam was a serious threat and possessed WMD. Well, we didn't find what we thought he had. But chemical weapons have been found, just not in the amounts we thought. It was a nice deception by the Iraqi government.
John R is spot on. I support it now because we have to stabilize that country. I am not a democracy addict either, but they need some sort of secular governance. It we leave to early, that place could fall apart and end up becoming a major problem for us down the road.
Saddam should be drug out back of the courthouse and shot in the head. It amazes me that the U.S. gets criticized constantly for its military actions, while the same people want a fair trial for a guy who murdered 100s of thousands of people.
We don't need to bring the troops home, we need to re-position them and quit using conventioanl tactics and thinking to fight an unconventional conflict.
my humble opinion, which doesn't count for much

I have never supported it. It was based on lies. First using the 9/11 to further a a covert agenda, then the WMD lies, then the Saddam lies, then the progress lies. Only 2 options left, withdraw or stay there for years while are own country is divided even further.
Aug. 24:Of all the words that President Bush used at his news conference this week to defend his policies in Iraq, the one that did not pass his lips was "progress."
For three years, the president tried to reassure Americans that more progress was being made in Iraq than they realized. But with Iraq either in civil war or on the brink of it, Bush dropped the unseen-progress argument in favor of the contention that things could be even worse.
The shifting rhetoric reflected a broader pessimism that has reached into even some of the most optimistic corners of the administration -- a sense that the Iraq venture has taken a dark turn and will not be resolved anytime soon."
So it appears that folks in the Bush Administration are finally coming `round to realize what the other 99.999999% of the country has known for some time -- there will be no Jeffersonian secular democracy in Iraq.
How they can contend with a straight face that these developments caught them by surprise is laughable.
Kurds, Shiites and Sunnis have been at loggerheads for millennia. What made the Bush Administration think it was suddenly going to be one big happy secular family?
Now we're not even planning to defeat the insurgency. We're only hoping to "diminish" it.
As for Saddam, his trial is a mockery. When at last we withdraw from Iraw. We shall see how effective his trial will be. He should have been tried and sentenced by now.

Support the war? that's hard to answer!
Support the troops - Definetely!! I also wish they could
come home safe and soon.
Our goverment is corrupt, just like any other country
maybe not as harsh, but trust me its corrupt.
The media is bashing our troops any time they kill
someone or that whole Guantanamo Bay thing, yes
it may have been wrong, but where is the media when
our soldiers were being tortured and drug thru the
streets. The media needs to get the hell out of the
way. They are only causing more tormoil then needed.
Why are our soldiers on trial for inhumane acts, who the
hell can decide what is humane or not when some terriost
f*ck is shooting at you or any person walking by you could
be a marter. War is war people, there is no way around
it. Those muslims didn't give a sh*t about our people or
the kids they left with out parents on 9/11, so why do we
have to give a sh*t about there's.
I may be rambling, but one thing is very clear.
We have not won this war and if you sit back and think
the terroists have been waging this war for over 20 years
against us (foreign US embassys, USS Cole, Kenya etc).
We need to step up our actions, get the media out of the
battlezone and wipe those S.O.B's off the earth. Our future
is at stake people, your kids future. Stop and think what
it will be like if we loose this war. There will be no more
freedom. Women you will be abussed mersivouly and
clothed from head to toe. Children (little boys) will be
assulted by older men (as that's a belief for them fools,
homesexuality will be huge). And you won't be reading
this or speaking english anymore. Your only god will
be Jihad and you will be tortured in ways you should never
thing of.
AMERICA IS OUR LAND and if we don't protect it and start
getting these muslims out of our land, we won't have it. I
personally will not bring children into the world right now,
as I am scared of what the future may hold for them.
Christ is my lord and savor !!!!
As for my exact thoughts, the marine's have the right idea.
KILL THEM ALL AND LET GOD SORT THEM OUT!!
America take control of the situations. We are to blame
everytime we walk into a dollar store or a party store or
gas station and you don't see any non Muslim looking employees.
Get the hell out of these stores, do you know if they support
terroists or not? How can you tell? AMERICA quit buying
from these stores & gas stations and let's see what starts
to happen...
God Bless OUR troops and everyone in harms way.
God Bless Ourselves if we continue to ignore what
the future may hold for us.

I don't support any war unless it is the very last resort !
We all know that the intel leading up to this invasion was dead wrong and we should have acknowledged it from the very start and held back.
That being said, I also acknowledge that our troops are over there doing a job most people wouldn't and they don't have a choice.
I am a Vet and know what it's like to be in that situation. You fight for what you believe in and you do your job the best you possibly can and try to make it back home alive.
These men and woman have earned and deserve our respect and 100% support, regardless of what anyone thinks of our Commander in Chief, this war, or anything else.
Please support those serving our country in every way you can and say thanks to a Vet when you see one - you will never know how much that means.

World War II ended in the forties but we still maintain a presence there. Hopefully the problems in Iraq won't require us to be there that long however it wouldn't be a bad thing to have some influence in the region in the event of future problems.
I believe going into Iraq was the right thing, I think the main problem is that the previous administration weakened our DOD to the point that they can't do their job to the best of their ability. Hopefully we will be able to learn from our difficulties and people like your friend will be able to perform their duties well and come home safely.
Our prayers are with them.
With regard to Saddam I think it is for his people to decide. If those atrocities occurred in our country I would expect him to face life in prison or the death penalty.

I'm in the military and I have been to South West Asia 3 times in the past 4 years and I can be the first to tell you most of the soldiers here don't do **** besides guard duty and it sucks. There really is no real reason for us to be here, but that's what we signed up for. When the time comes to go to war no matter what the reason, right or wrong, we will do what we are told and try and keep our sanity and stay alive.
As for Saddam, I think he should be put in prison and rot to death, give him the rest of his life to sit there and think about all the negative things he did to these people.
I don't think we need all the soldiers that we have here, but there is always a bigger plan than right now.
Think about this, what country is north of Iran? Afghanistan. What country is south of Iran? Iraq.
Now tell me why we have so many soldiers in both countries?
