The pup was saved from the shelter (hooray for Mark) and is 6 months old. It has a yellow continual discharge from both eyes and we are hoping to find an affordable or home remedy since even the cost of feeding the dog is almost beyond his means. He is attempting to train the dog as a companion dog and wonders if anyone might know where he can find assistance with funding for the assistance with training, and possible upkeep as he is disabled and additional income is not likely. I don't know much about grants but was wondering if there are grants for such things? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

call the local ASPCA, SPCA, humane society, animal shelter, vets office, and rescue groups to see if anyone can help with the bills. A lot of the rescue groups in this area, Lansing Michigan area, will help with the bills as long as he can house the dog.
Paws with a cause train dogs for disabled people, and they then match them up with students(new owner) at no charge for the student. Mark could check in to that, and he might be able to donate the dog to paws with a cause, Leader dogs for the blind in Rochester Michigan. Or other dog org's. Like U.S. Customs, search and rescue, K-9, etc.
Mark could also look into and org. called helping hands. This org. trains monkeys for people who are in wheel chairs. I hope this has helped you. Good luck, and way to go Mark.

What about asking the local humane society? Even if they would help teach him how to train and care for the dog at no charge... and MAYBE their vet would look at the dogs eyes for no charge or a reduced charge. It's worth a try.

Call some vets- they may sponsor the animal or know of an organization or private run agency that would. Rescue groups might be another place to check for resources.
Best of luck.

Sometimes the animal rescue league or the aspca can help in the cost of surgeries or vetrinary care. I don't know about the training but they would be good places to start. Good luck.

Perhaps he could do some volunteer work at the shelter in exhange for food and medication. If he is disabled there is always work like making calls to solicit donations.

Many eye infections respond to terrimycin, an ointment you put into the eye. It can be bought online. http://www.pet-discount-supply.com/horses/terramycin_for_horses-g0902003.htm

Check with DHS for advice on who might do obedience training.
You are a good friend!
Good luck to you and your friend.
