In literature, for example, a primary source would be the book, play, poem itself....say Shakespeare's Hamlet. Secondary sources are the books, articles, etc written about Hamlet. The same hold for most other fields -- but with variations in what is primary according to the field. Usually primary sources involve direct evidence or data gathering -- an interview or a survey. And to add one more twist...it depends on the citation format...are you talking MLA, APA, IEEE, AMA?

Primary source and secondary can mean two things.

1) A trustworthy source with a second one confirming it. The secondary would be unrelated to the first.

2) Primary source: First hand account of things. (the victim said...)( the president has said...)
....Secondary source: hear say. (the police say that the victim.....)( reliable sources say.....)
