You shouldn't be too scared to visit church. If you are worried about not contributing when they collect the money remember any amount is okay. Just donate what you are comfortable with even if it is only a dollar.
Sit near the back if you are nervous. Don't walk up to the altar when they start standing up for communion. Don't worry, look around and you'll see several people do not take communion. You don't have to sing during the songs, many people don't.
And for the rest, just follow what the rest are doing. Stand when they stand, sit, kneel when they do.
When the priest asks everyone to give each other the sign of peace you just turn to a few people near you, shake their hand and say peace be with you.
And when he says the mass is ended go in peace, wait until the end of the song to walk out.
Try it once, it is really pretty interesting.

I go to Mass weekly and also to confession and have never, ever been asked to give any money for my sins but ... Penance! As in prayers to be said after confession. So i really don't know what you are talking about! Are you sure you're asking the right people? Maybe some other religion asks people to pay for their sins but the Catholic Church doesn't!

This is called an "Indulgence". This quaint abomination is practiced by the Holy Roman Catholic Church. It used to cost $25,000.00 USD and required a 5 minute audience with the pope for official validation.

You get a piece of damnable paper with a Papal Seal that says you've just bought your one way Ticket to Heaven "IF" you can say a Hail Mary before you Kick Off!

That is the Catholic $ redemption plan .." A buck or two and I'll bless you"!

The Tele-Evangelists do the same with less pomp!

There is no such practice. You don't pay money for your sins. You confess your sins.

You're thinking of INDULGENCES, which are not "paid for" by money, but earned, so to speak, by PRAYER. An indulgence is just a human way to get people to start thinking about their spiritual existence. It's one of the things that Pavlov's dogs proved....people respond to rewards and punishments. Unfortunately, though, people don't understand the concept, and think they need an abicus and a calculator to keep track of it. If you go out and commit sin, then come back and pray indulgences with the intention of going back out and sinning again, you're S.O.L. on redemption. You can't buy your way into Heaven with ANYTHING.

The false practice of selling indulgences during the middle ages was done by independent people, not sanctioned by the Vatican.

I agree with gg. You can't purchase pardon with money. Jesus paid for your sins on the cross.

Although I don't agree with being "SOL on redemption" after committing the same sins again. Those were paid for too. But I'm Baptist, so there there may be a denominational difference of opinion there.

Sin is free. Absolution only requires remorse. Tithes are accepted for those who wish to contribute to a heavenly bank account.

The church does not sell tickets to heaven.

there was a period when catholics used to practice that. this is actually the one of the reasons why protestants came about. martin luther, founder of protestantism went to the vatican and saw all sorts of atrocities that was practiced by the church then. he was a bright man who was a priest, and with that he started to really question catholic dogma. he then nailed his thoughts on the door of a church and one of his thoughts were on the giving of indulgences and how corrupt the church became then. it was a very dark period in history, and thankfully, such practices do not exists anymore.

gg is exactly right - give her best answer!

You shouldn't pay for your sins with money, but with repentance, which is between you and God - no money involved!

If there's a priest telling you you have to pay for sins, I'd report him to a bishop and start attending another parish!
