Take your basic icing recipe, one of the best is http://www.wilton.com/recipes/recipesandprojects/icing/bcream.cfm, and slowly add small amounts of red icing coloring until it is the shade of pink that is slightly LIGHTER than what you want. As it dries, it will darken up.
I also add a small amount of almond extract to the recipe, just makes it pop a bit.

If you're using store-bought frosting, just get white and buy a bottle of red food coloring (sometimes sold in packs of 4 colors).
Add the food coloring one drop at a time & stir into the frosting. A little goes a long way! Add until you have the shade of pink you want.
If you are making the recipe from scratch, here's one from allrecipes.com. You can check there for other frosting recipes and read reviews of others who have tried them.
My preference is real vanilla in recipes, but it's best that you use whatever's in the cupboard already.
Here's one for an example, that rated 4.5 out of 5.0 stars, with 105 reviews:
Best White Icing Ever
"This icing recipe is #1! It's quick and easy to make, bright white for cake decorating, and you can easily change it's consistency! This is the most important icing recipe you'll ever have. It's so basic, it makes the hassle of cake decorating so much easier! If you wish, use half shortening and half unsalted butter."
Original recipe yield: 4 to 5 cups.
INGREDIENTS:
* 4 cups confectioners' sugar
* 1 cup shortening
* 2 tablespoons water
* 1 teaspoon clear imitation vanilla extract
DIRECTIONS:
1. In a large bowl, combine sugar, shortening, water and vanilla. Beat on low speed to combine, then beat on medium speed for a full five minutes. It won't look like Icing at first, but keep the mixer going for a full five minutes, and then you're done!
2. Note: If you're not using this for decorating, but just for icing the cake, thin the icing by adding 3 tbs. of corn syrup, or water to the icing.

All you need is a little red food coloring. You add to a canned icing or prepare your own. Very easy to prepare (I just use powdered sugar and add enough water or milk to make the right consistancy. If you want a little something extra - use some butter first (either 1/2 stick or whole stick and blend it well with your mixer then add the powdered sugar and milk/water).

Try this low calorie frosting:
In a bowl make white/yellow instant pudding (but only use half of the what it suggests for liquid). It'll be pasty.
Then add a drop of red food coloring, and mix with the pudding.
Then fold in a tub of cool whip.
Wa-la!
Happy Birthday to Mom!

I can't remember the exact amounts , powdered sugar and milk. Drizzle the milk in the powder sugar and continue to drizzle milk in until you get the right consistency. To make it pink: a little red food coloring ( start with two or three drops to see what shade of pink you want if you want darker pink add more)

Mix a red liquid food coloring into a white buttercream SLOWLY, a few drops at a time. Blend well and repeat until the color is deep enough to suit your taste. (Wear latex gloves when playing with the food coloring, though; it will stain your skin.)

start out with red food coloring & vanilla or whatever flavor icing - just as long as its white. Add a drop of the red & mix it in & keep adding drops until you get your desired color.

quick and easy way is to buy a can of vanilla/white frosting and some red food coloring. add a drop to the frosting mix until color is blended and then just add red coloring until you have to shade of pink you need.
the other way is powdered sugar and butter. combine both ingredients until smooth then add your red food coloring until it's the shade of pink you want. good luck
