The root problem is political islam, not islam in itself. Theocracies are so at odd with the values of the Free World that a clash of civilizations (which has been brewing for a few centuries) is inevitable. The West had to go through very difficult hardships during the last centuries, and it learned that State and Church had to be kept separate - because gods (which are fictional until further proofs, to put it mildly) can not be held accountable for what they inflict on humanity, and their believers have proved that anything can be done in their name. The islamic world must also go through similar reforms experienced by the West, or it condems itself to violence and suffering, along all those who share this small planet called Earth.
The solution lies in the West avoiding passivity (cancers must be aggressively fought if the organism is to survive) and being proactive in finding solutions that (1) will neutralize the threaths posed by fundamentalist organizations and governments who finds themselves confined to the throes inherent to evolutionary dead-ends, by containment or by force when necessary; (2) by helping the democratic and secular forces at work in islamic countries, (3) by finding ways to share more equitably Earth's ressources with those governments and populations who share the most essential of West's objectives and values, and (4) by realizing that the tolerance for intolerance could mean the end of everything we cherish.

No! There will be a conflict between Islam and the Western industrialised nations, which should not be confused with Christianity. Too much is made of Christianity being aggressive. Islam, if properly studied, does not tolerate other beliefs. Muslims are commanded by the words and teachings of Mohammed, and other Islamic scholars to convert the whole world, even at the point of the sword.
Through the Quran (Koran) Muslims are taught to win and not to lose face. Any conflict with them will be brutal as they will quickly demonstrate in a war. No quarter will be given by them. They are taught that the West is doing the work of the Devil and that we are weak. They wil take our money, our education and our skills, but only to use against us.
They know that the time of oil is coming to an end so the prices go up, and the West cannot keep paying high prices for oil so war is inevitable as without oil we will have no electricity, gas, transport, etc. The West is 100% dependant on oil and high prices, even higher than present will create great economic problems for us. Yes, conflict is inevitable because Islam is unyielding and the West is also looking for a conflict. So watch out!

Like someone else with their head on the right way said, this has nothing to do with religion it's about resources. Religion is used because the majority of us don't make money from oil, so the powers that be need something to fire us up about, or nobody would fight.
Anyone who thinks that the West (and I AM from the West) will "beat" Islam easily is in for a huge shock. Sorry, but there it is. I think Mr Bush and Mr Blair have started something that is about to get very out of control and very scary. We would all do well to remember that the next time we're anywhere near a ballot box.
I don't see how it can be avoided with the current governments of the UK and US still in power.

Thing seem to be going that way and it is a real shame. All religions promote peace and loving, not war. If there is a God / Ala / Creator or what-ever, I'm sure he / she would not like to see wars fought in his / her name.
I don't understand how all religeons are based on basically the same book, yet people interpret them so differently.
I personally am Christian but have friends of many different beliefs. I'm seeing increasing debates setting the 2 religeons as enemies. American Christian's in particular seem to be promoting Islam as the enemy. Islam is not the enemy. It's just a few d**kheads promoting violence in Islam's name.

Almost all religion boils down to the same values..
1. Be a good person
2. Forgive others for their mistakes
3. Believe in whatever god, and be happy with what you have.
All these different variations - and people fighting for their religion is just plain stupid..
And all those terrorist people..their not proper religious people..proper religious people would have forgiven the western world for our "sins"..
Needles to say I'm a non-believer.. I don't believe there will ever be a big "showdown" - if anything religions should merge and simplify..
what does it matter if your god is the sun, christ or Mohammad? they're all "out of office" so to speak..
Could we all not just get along?

More likely a showdown between being a theist and being an anti-theist, but IMO it's more likely extremism versus extremism. It doesn't matter which sides are duking it out between themselves, but it won't necessarily be a black-and-white case of good versus evil or light versus darkness...it will be freedom versus tyranny no matter which group of people or person fills the role of the tyrant.

I think that the Islamic world will band together to destroy Israel, and that the pope with the U.S. will step in and stop the impending war. This will be a short lived peace of about 3 years. Then all hell will break loose.

If your neighbor wanted to kill you and was recruiting as many people as possible to help him do it. Would you want a show down with him?
I don't think it can be avoided. Islam teaches that all who are not Muslims need to die.

I think you could say we're not approaching it, it's happening!
My hope is that the current turmoil will prove the death throes of theism, and the enlightenment will resume and we progress into a secular, rational world. A forlorn hope, I know.
