Hi well it depends on the type of television from Rear projection, LCD and Plasma.
Currently if you buy a rear projection you need to be able ot change the bulbs and they can be really expensive, not forgetting they are hard to come by. So i would say about 3 years changing bulbs and 5 years if you dont have 2.
Plasma televisions when it came to first generation only lasted 2 years because of image burn. The 2nd generation are not as bad and can last 4 years as that but still some image burn is around so you dont want to waste money.
But the clear runner is LCD as they can run for up to 10 years due to the technology built inside and no bulbs or gas tubes ( See Plasma ) to run done. So like i did i would recommend LCD and if you have a pc make sure it has a Tv out, you may pay a bit more but to make it future proof go for one with HD Ready.

They can last for years- to be honest though If your TV is not a digital it will be no use next year when they switch the analogue signal is switched off- and then it will be purely digital - its the same with radios although the FM signal will not be switched off for years yet!

Average lifespan for Americans is around seventy-five so there should not be any reason why a transvestite should not expect to live to eighty or so - - - oh, do you mean that device spewing images & sound? With proper maintainence decades, but the way a lot of people abuse electronics, no more than eight years. Peace.

They usually last until they break down, which seems to be sooner and sooner to make us all buy new ones.
Bring back the TV repair man I say!

I know someone who's had an ancient CRT set for over 20 years. New plasma and LCD's have a far shorter lifespan.
