what should I do? This morning one side was red and sore. I put a dab of Polysporin (antibiotic cream) on it but is there anything better to use?

Hi!
The ingredients in some lip soothers like Blistex are helpful, but menthol can be abit on the caustic side, I think. A good moisturizing ingredient is key, and sometimes cracks in skin integrity like that are helped by improved nutrition, a B complex vitamin tablet plus a daily multivit with minerals, and extra water intake. Like any addiction, too much is really not better. I have found adding the extra B complex helps me immensely and within a day when I have the same problem. At night during the winter months, I use A&D ointment to coat my lips generously just before falling asleep. It isn't a good idea to use an antibiotic when you really don't have a bacterial infection. Vitamin C has been noted to help, too. However, mega doses of any vitamin are a bad idea. Excess Vit. C just pees out in your urine because it is water soluble and not stored by the body, (so just pour that money for extra C tabs right down the toilet and save a trip to the drug store :-) ). Vit A, D, E, and K are stored in fatty tissue, and can easily become toxic.

it probably means you're dehydrated
even chap sticks can't prevent your lips from cracking when you're severly dehydrated. just drink loads of water and you'll be fine. also the weather (usually when it's very cold and windy) can chap your lips

water water water, if you are having touble with dry lips trying drinking alot. your lips are a really good hydration meter for your body. if that doesnt help or if you are positive you are well hydrated try to use a lil eucerin lotion on them. its unscented and taste free. my son has terrible exzema dry skin to the worst bleeding extreme i use a lot of eucerin on him it helps. also try not to lick your lips.

A lot of times that is caused by a virus. There's nothing you can really do to stop it.
