Generally, both are done, but if only one is available then several short test. This allows you to determine what you got and what you missed, so you will know where you need additional study.

From my experience it is better to take short tests throughout study and one more in depth one at the the end.
I dont think taking just one test at the end can justify a year of study.

I would go with the shorter tests...U r never gonna remember everything for one big test at least with shorter u only have to remember a few things

I like to take one test to show total mastery of the topic at hand. People who fear their ability to understand a topic mostly prefer to take smaller test under the idea that they can improve on a bad score.
