He needs to find a school he wants to attend and apply. After that is done he needs to speak w/ an advisor in the financial aid department.. They have loans that he can take out himself (student loans) and they wont have to be paid until he graduates, 6 months after he graduates. Also, he needs to feel out a fafsa..
http://www.fafsa.ed.gov
After that is filled out, and has got accepted to a school, filling out the fafsa can determine how much "free money" or rather assistance you can get from the government.. Those are non-repayable and they are called grants..
The less you make, as a parent, the better you are because the government will contribute more...
You might also want to visit a site called, http://www.fastweb.com
This site tells you how you can get scholarships, some are as easy as writing an essay on a subject matter... The amounts they give you for those you are around 500-10000, but those are usually hard to get because of so much competition
Well i hope all this helps...

resa_renee's answer explains the best place to start. Fill out the FAFSA to determine his eligibility (he will definately be able to take out student loans in his name...your income will determine how much in grants he is awarded). Also, if you apply for the PLUS loan (Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students) and are denied, your son becomes eligible for additional loan amounts from the government. His financial aid counselor can walk you through that process. So even if you have poor credit and know you will be denied, applying for the loan can help him get more funds for his schooling.

You will need to fill out a FAFSA at fafsa.ed.gov. This uses you and your parent's income to determine how much your family can afford to pay for your education. Most likely you will be eligible for grants and the Subsidized Stafford Loan. The grants/loans will be in your name and you will not be penalized by your parent's credit. A grant and a Subsidized Stafford Loan will not be enough to cover all of your expenses. To get all of your school related expenses covered you will have to take out additional loans and ask for extra grants. I have listed below exactly what you NEED to do.
This is what you will NEED to do:
1) Fill out a FAFSA
2) Contact your financial aid office and get your parent to apply for the Parent Plus Loan
3) If they get turned down, you contact your financial aid office and tell them that you want an UNSUBSIDIZED Stafford LOAN
4) If you have unmet need ask for additional grants (FSEOG, your state's grant)
