It depends. If you do basic mendelian genetics it's pretty simple to get by with elementary math.

However, once you move into population genetics there is a lot of statistics involved. Increasingly genetics research is population driven and the level of mathematical literacy required is increasing.

My brother is a PHD, he is a genetic researcher. Although he's very good at math, his BA is in Biology. The science is most important.
