He has a bed sore, but is this normal? I mean the whole room stinks. He is in a private room. What could be causing this. I searched online last night and could not find a thing. The nurses say they have bathed him 2-3 times a day. He does swet a lot but it is not normal B.O. Any help would be great.
Thanks.

he is also on a resperator,(sp?) can he still be repositioned? I also wondered if any of the drugs (antibiotics) could leave a smell because he is getting rid of it through his pores. I'm just trying to make sense of it all.

Yes, this can happen. Most likely he is being fed through a tube, and the stuff they give through those tubes can cause your body to emit an odor. I used to do social services in a nursing home, most of the people who couldn't feed themselves had an odor about them. Ask the nurses any time you have a question, they should be able to answer questions like this, if they are not willing to answer questions, demand to speak to their supervisor. Bed sores can get really bad, people can actually die from them or get really bad infections, but it's almost impossible to prevent them in coma patients. He should have an air pad on top of his mattress to provide more cushioning. And the nurses need to make sure he is re-positioned several times a day, but again, this is really hard in coma patients since he can't be sat up and stuff. Good Luck, I hope he comes out of his coma soon. You sound like a good cousin, make sure you are talking to him while you are in his room and play his favorite music, even read to him from a book he likes. And have his favorite tv shows playing on his tv when nobody is there visiting him.
P.S.- If your family really feels like he is being neglected or something is not right, you have the right to talk to a social worker or ombudsman, there should be info. posted somewhere about an ombudsman program. If your instinct tells you he isn't receiving proper care, listen to that instinct, he can't advocate for himself right now so he needs your family to do it for him.

VERY VERY SIMPLE !!!
Demand to inspect the bed sores yourself. Do not take no for an answer, and raise moderate hell to do it.
I would.
Very few lay people understand the mechanics of sore development...it's a pretty CONTINUAL management case. It can
be done and there are patches that will stick effectively for several days, but they are expensive, and I would NEVER take any nurse's word for anything.
Go get 'em !

Maybe it is not him but one of the nurses, you never know. I mean, the guy bathes 2-3 times a day unless someone is lying!

No, it sounds like he is being neglected...contact the supervisor in your hospital, or his doctor...they have beds to prevent bed sores and he has to have it prescribed to him...I doubt they wash him that many times....he needs to be turned also to keep the pressure off of the sore...Something ain't right with their story..Contact an abuse lawyer before something happens. And let the supervisor know you will if things don't change..including the odor. I took care of elderly patients and NEVER smelled anything like that..it is rotting flesh, probably..and it should be dressed with something this is very upsetting to me.
