Several studies have investigated the relationship between intelligence and the degree of religious belief (excluding humanism), with most showing that intelligence averages decrease significantly with the "importance of religion" an IQ testee rates as apt. But most studies chiefly show that people with religious beliefs have lower IQ's and tend to be less educated.

Before you give a list people who were smart and had religion, let me give one that didn't. Albert Einstein! he quotes-

"It was, of course, a lie what you read about my religious convictions, a lie which is being systematically repeated. I do not believe in a personal God and I have never denied this but have expressed it clearly."

I know nothing except the fact of my ignorance.-Socrates(The Original Agnostic)

This is not a strong enough argument to prove that religion is false but it is an intresting topic for discussion!

Jesus Christ, do you people even know what negative correlation is? It means on AVERAGE people with low IQ are religious compared to those with high IQ.

Please read the other thread he made to have my in depth look on the subject: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AtqA1ruQBeRnt3bOjohbd6Dsy6IX?qid=20060824031931AAWUGAV

negatively correlated? this means, religion and intelligence cannot go together. so do you mean, all people with low IQ are religious? and all people with high IQ does not believe in God?

i think you knew you are writing crap when you were writing it. there are stuff in this world called "abstract". and they better be left alone. why do you have to put everything into an equation? is it just because you think you have become too smart studying science?

i am religious and this sounds like praising my own bum but still i cannot but say i am intelligent enough to have been through the best schools all along and now pursue a career many people die to have. if you think i have a low IQ, i dont care because your equation does not hamper my success in life a bit. and i can give you thousands other example from real life. you always dont have to name Einstein and Socrates, you know? they were exceptional, and exceptions cannot be examples.

what's your iq by the way?

You do realize, of course, that Albert Einstein was bi-polar ?
How about Pat Robertson of the 700 Club? He has several degrees and is an attorney. He heads one of the largest organizations in the world to help people that are underprivileged. Has a TV show that is aired every day.
He even ran as president. As an independent and received the majority of popular votes.

What has an intelligent person like you ever done to improve this world we live in ????

I just skimmed over your article and made it down to the three or fours sentences you are referring to. It doesn't say how old this article is. It doesn't state how they got their info for that particular statement. It just says 'studies". There are many people from all walks of life who don't believe in God. Are they by definition smarter than me even if I continue on in my academic education? There are so many variables to this blanket statement it is almost laughable. I am sure there are many places where people don't have the oppertunities for a great education but they have hope through their religious beliefs for a happy life anyway. Is that stupid? Well, they have something to hold on to and care about that gives their life meaning. I don't think so. We all can't go to Harvard but we can live our life with grace and dignity. Do people who have no moral compass or belief system live their life with grace and dignity? I have yet to see it. It is usually " screw people over as fast as you can." They feel they have that right because " they are smarter". Don't love your neighbor- take advantage of them. It is their fault - they are not as "smart" as you. Am I making my point clear? You are as arrogant as they come. I wonder what your children's IQ's are? What if someday they want to believe in something? Will their IQ have gone down somehow? Now we just need someone to find a "study" that says the opposite. I am sure there is one because you can find studies to say anything. You can even find them to say that smoking doesn't cause cancer. I hope you really think about what you have just said to every person of faith. I think you are the one with the low IQ. If it says otherwise, you cheated.

If Albert Einstein gets you through the hard times in life, I guess you've had an easy life. He's also the guy that inspired the most deadly weapon known to man. That's a great guy to look up to. A world ruled by intelligence seems like a cold, cold world to me.

Slanderous or otherwise, he should ask himself a few questions:

1) Where did my intelligence (not knowledge) come from?
2) How did I develope the wisdom to use my attained knowledge in the correct manner?

Socrates & Einstein (your examples) are probably wondering why they didn't smarten up before they died...

The smartest person in the world can still die & go to Hell. How brilliant is that?

Gee, I basically responded a matching question here! you ought to to benefit The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, aka the Mormons. in assessment to many different religions, there's a sturdy constructive correlation between years of formal training and church attendance. some million/2 of the individuals who've 8 to twelve years of formal training attend our church centers regularly. For those with some college, the well-known is between sixty 5 and 70%. the fee is going to approximately seventy 5% for those with college levels, and nears eighty% for those with graduate college training. I baptized a chum those days, who won't have been as charitable as he could have been to his previous allegiance whilst he suggested, “it somewhat is astonishing to no longer might desire to envision your ideas on the chapel door.”
