I think you can sprinkle pepper in the garden to keep them away.
If you go to your nearest garden centre, there's probably a spray or something that you can buy.

Cats dont usually poop on grass. They usually find earthty corners to take their poop, because its easier to burry it.
There are some sprays you can buy at a hardware and garden store or even some pet supplies store. Just spray it around your garden, where the cats poop. You can also spray some in thelimits ofyour property.
The cats will be offended by the odour and will go somewhere else.
Citronella, moth balls are also odours that cats dislikes.

The dog tip is excellent, as is the stuff about pepper and chili. You can also put bottles of water around - I'm not sure why this works, but it does. And lavender... alternatively, throw dead mice into your neighbours garden and they'll spend all the time over there.

My Girlfriends dad in an ex-fireman and he keeps a filled up water fire extinguished by the back door, when he sees a cat in his garden he gives them a good squirt and they bugger off over the fence.
Excellent fun too and doesn't hurt the cat.

Sprinkling lemon zest around the garden works and it doesn't smell bad.
My mum used to use these metal cat silhouettes, with marbles for eyes. Don't get these, they are sh1te. She often found doo right next to them!

-- Scatter pinecones in the areas the cats like to visit, especially under bushes. Ponderosa or other prickly cones work best.
-- Buy a commercial cat repellent and scatter or spray it in the places where the cats are doing their business.
-- Sprinkle heavy coats of pepper in those areas (use about one 4-ounce can) where they are leaving their calling cards.
