can anyone explain to me how my toaster knows when it's time to go Bing!?.

I've unscrewed it and looked inside.... no obvious signs of timer of any such like mechanism. I ask because I've just burnt the toast and the kitchen is full of acrid smoke, normally the toaster goes bing when the toast is ready without any burning (using same type of bread). Very strange.

I've put the toaster back together and it still works.

The god of toasters has decided its time for yours to join its friends in toaster Valhalla. Say your farewells in a dignified and mature manner then nip down TESCO and by a new Russel Hobbs one there great.

It's not a timer it's a thermostat. A thermostat is a device for maintaining the temperature of a system within a range by controlling, either directly or indirectly, the flow of heat energy into or out of the system. If this has become faulty then your toaster won't know when to 'bing' as you so eloquently put it and your toast will be cremated!

first of all it is electronic and works by heat sensing it think. You need to go by the settings sometimes you set it fior 1t 3 would be for thibgs like bagel;s or or crumpets or very thin bread things like 5 or 7 settings would be f0or thick sliced bread. So always my suggestion is to go by the manufacturers and makers instructions and read them carefully so that you understand how it all works also make sure that you have the guarantee wothj you so that ifr you do have any problems you can send the toaster back also make sure you have a help line so that you can contact them as well.

Your toaster will have a printed circuit board (PCB) inside it. Do you have buttons like 'CANCEL', 'DEFROST', 'REHEAT'... if so then your PCB will be behind those. If you took it apart and didn't notice a PCB it may be because it is probably behind a mica sheet to protect it from the heat.
The 'binger' will also be on the PCB.

Just out of interest what make and model of toaster is it? It shouldn't be easy to take an electrical appliance apart - it should have tamper-proof safety screws holding it together.

Your toaster is getting out of line. You need to take it outside and kick it's @ss. That'll teach it not to burn your toast anymore.

I'm 100% serious. Go take it outside and beat the crap out of it.

toasters work with a Bimetallic Strip; 2 strips of diffenent metals sandwiched together. because they are different metals, when heated, they expand at a different rates and so they bend, which pushes a swithc and...bing!
