Aspartame, better known as "Nutrasweet", is made up of two amino acids: phenylalanine and aspartic acid. The only real risk from it is if you take massive doses, which will cause an imbalance in your amino acid intake, which could cause problems. Some people may be sensitive to it, and MAY experience some hyperactivity if they take a lot of it. Other than that, it is only dangerous to people who have a condition known as "phenylketonuria" and can't break down the chemicals, which build up in the body and cause toxic effects. As far as I know, there is NO link to Alzheimer's disease whatsoever, as Alzheimer's disease was around long before aspartame existed. An unethical scientist who wanted to buy stock in the company at a lower price published a study that said that it caused health problems, but he was later refuted, and disgraced - he has lost his credibility, which is crucial to a scientist.

Two known risk factors are hepatoxicity and for some the fact that it rockets phenylalanine directly into your blood stream. This is particularly bad for people who suffer from depression or phenylketoneuria. It doesn't cause blindness but the methyl alcohol used to manufacture it could. All of that alcohol is gone by the time the processing is done.It may have been linked to carcinogenesis but I haven't read that anywhere though it does seem to be a popular opinion in some of your answers.I'm sure that sucralose(Splenda) or stevia are somewhat safer.I'm only providing you with what I've read rather then links so I may even be wrong on some points as I haven't read any recent studies.

I'm not sure of the exact details but a case of diet coke was left in the heat on an american military base in iraq and when heated it contained similar chemicals to those found in petrol! It's cacogenic and also causes blindness. It's banned in some countries. There is always an alternative (even if diabetic), just don't eat or drink anything with aspartame in! Give up the diet coke, etc

I was sent an email a while back stating problems with using "sweeteners" - memory loss was one of the main issues.
