in australia we are short on recruits for the armed forces,so in the best interests of the country do you think some sort of national service training should be brought in ,lets face it we have a very military minded with an expansionist policy directly to our north.

Yes, it is time. But I propose a draft in a different methodology:

First, everyone should serve their country...I am a firm believer in that, but not everyone is made to "pull a trigger", and I can accept that being a retired Sergeants Major.

We need to have a civil defense force. Everyone trained in first aid, chemical & biological, small-unit tactics, etc. I'm not talking about the National Guard, but a real civil defense force where a young man or women would have certain responsibilities for the defense of their communities both against terrorism and natural disasters.

We need more logistical and medical personnel...trust me!

Now in America there are so many people who can not take care of themselves (regardless of the situation that their in) that the civil defense force would be responsible to evacuate or provide them security.

We don't have enough police, fireman, etc. to do this.

We must prepare ourselves the free and democratic countries for terrorist activities and future attacks...if we just sit back and say "well nothing this year" trust me that is when the enemy will come.

In lieu of all this, we must also higher salaries for the men and women on the front lines....especially the trigger pullers!

Just my feelings.

I'm of two minds on this.

Having an all volunteer military has definite advantages. During my two years in Veitnam, I had experience with both volunteers and draftees. I can definitely say that I would greatly prefer commanding a unit composed of volunteers, as opposed to a unit primarily composed of men who would rather be almost ANY place else.

However, if we include all types of government service, I heartily endorse having every citizen contribute one or two years of service, particularly if they have some choice over the nature of that service. Not only does mandatory national service provide the nation with a massive pool of prospective employees, it also provides the individual with exposure to different lifestyles, different ways of thinking, and possible career options. Everyone wins.

Yes, if people do not have a job they should not get any dole money but have to do 5 years national service before being entitled to any, maybe with a bit of discpline and self respect, they would go on to have productive working lives.
