My daughter has very thick, curly, shoulder length hair. She wants me to straighten it, but blowing it out or pressing it just takes too long. She's starting fifth grade this year and I want to get away from plaits.

OK. don't listen to these girls. Who gets their first relaxer in "high school" come on now. I'm a hair stylist and I do perms on children under 10. I got my first relaxer when i was 6 and my niece just got her first relaxer and she is 6. and it worked out fine, my hair is long and healthy. They make relaxers for children, I don't think they would if it wasn't o.k. ,But if your are feeling skeptical take her to a hair salon. They will definitely perm her hair.

I received my first relaxer at 12, my sister as well. Don't do it yet. Take the extra time on a Sunday to press and curl her hair. Although it is time consuming if was a great bonding tool for me and my mother and I continue the practice with my nieces today.

i think 10 is a good age for a perm i got mines when i was10 or 11 and nothing happen to my hair......if she was under 5 that will be a totally different story....if you don't want a perm at this time you also have the option to press her hair to straighten it......also if you are going to put a perm in her hair use a kiddy perm the adult perms are way to strong....

I think you should wait until she reaches high school, plaits are the best option until then.

Consult a professional! Although I have an uneasy feeling about it for a ten-year old.

you can, just make sure you use a children's relaxer or a mild adult relaxer. it would probably be best to have a professional stylist do it who is familiar with black and ethnic hair though.

If she is distressed by her hair or if she's being ridiculed at school then go for it
