use Firefox
install Spybot, Adware and Spyware Blaster
use a decent firewall (Zone Alarm is ok, and free)
don't use Windows media player (winamp is a good alternative)

Search for a software called AdAware or Spybot S&D.

Use mozilla firefox instead of internet explorer, IE actually allows ads to install onto your computer.
