The medieval Dutch word "kolf" or "kolve" meant "club." It is believed that word passed to the Scots, whose old Scots dialect transformed the word into "golve," "gowl" or "gouf."
By the 16th Century, the word "golf" had emerged.

Haha, I have heard this before. My fella plays golf and so do alot of our friends. I think blokes just made that up because they are the only ones sad enough to play it!!!! It ruins a good walk if you ask me!! ;)
