from a westerners perspective, Indian dating and matchmaking are pretty bizarre....and the whole issue of paying a dowry and so on....we are lucky in the west not to have to deal with that BS...our families here give us their blessings, but dont control who we marry.

I am western and married to an indian. I don't think this Indian tradition of choosng a bride/groom for their kids is so bad. After all, family does matter, and it's not nice to have a new son/daughter-in-law every 2 or 3 years just because he/she noticed that he/she does not like my child so much.
Obviously, if they have a stable relationship for a long time, this remains to be considered, but if they are singly, why leave them that way until they're 30?
If they are comfortable with (as most indians are) there is no problem in getting them married. After all, these relationships last most of the times longer than actual love marriages (where there was love before wedding) because the two partners will try more to save their relationship.

I can't give you an accurate opinion on that issue - but I bet the current attitude is to say most people are against it - but the reality is most in India enjoy it.
