Pseudomembranous colitis caused by an overgrowth of the organism Clostridium dificille can result after broad spectrum antibiotic use kills off much of the rest of the normal flora in the intestines. It causes severe diarrhea. It is not, however, highly contagious to others around. That is the only part of your description that does not fit with this diagnosis.
In order to treat it, usually the patient is put in the hospital on intravenous Vancomycin if they can tolerate that medication.

C Diff....and easily treated with 'Flagyl' antibiotic. This infection is usually caused when you are taking antibiotics. The antibiotics get rid of the good bugs in the gut as well as the bad. Then C Diff easily takes over.More common than you think!

Enterococcus faecium is another superbug found in hospitals. Penicillin-Resistant Enterococcus was seen in 1983, Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococcus (VRE) in 1987, and Linezolid-Resistant Enterococcus (LRE) in the late 1990s

She had a course of antibiotics, but it took 3 weeks to go !
