I have always done it myself, and liked it. However, if I was a millionaire, I would use a professional service. It just depends on the money you want to spend. What they would do is sit down with you and between the two of you, decide what you like. Then you discuss how much money you want to spend, or not go over a certain amount. All this would depend on if you went with them or not. If money was not object, then I would go crazy, but since there is furniture, drapes, floor coverings, pictures, lamps, etc. etc., just hard to say, and also how large of an area, or house, etc. Good luck.

Yes, and I have a degree in interior design. If I were doing an extensive renovation/addition/building a whole new house, I would definitely use an interior designer to make sure the house would function the way we need it to (and look good, to boot!) A good designer should make the house more "yours" than any builder could....
I'd want to hire someone who had a lot of experience in that specific aspect of it- I wouldn't hire a commercial designer to do a house, and vice versa. As for pay, that would greatly depend on the scope of the project- whether it's adding a MIL suite (where the designer would probably just review the builder's plans), or designing a house from scratch....

If I wasn't into interior design and have studied it extensively and plan on doing it for a profession I would say YES use an interior design service. Going on whatever you feel's best can be quite a risk, especially if you're going to put a chunk of change into whatever you're doing. You won't regret using their services. If you're totally comfortable with it, you can use one through an online service from another state that'll charge less than say, one from California, Florida, Chicago or New York.
Take bids from several different interior design services and whichever one you like the most, and is the most affordable with your budget, then go with that one. Don't just pick ONE and run with it, be careful, like you would in choosing a Family Doctor.
Good luck!

I used an interior design service because I didn't have the time to oversee the project however firstly they asked me how I envisaged the room, what I needed and wanted in it and listened to all my ideas. When they put their suggestions forward it was very helpful and we worked together to some extent on the design. I was always in control but what really made it worthwhile was leaving the house every morning, not worrying, coming home to see what had been done and being totally involved re my ideas and what I wanted at all times.
I had my bathroom and a downstairs room re-modelled and paid £10,000 but that included absolutely everything. New bathroom fittings, new furniture downstairs....I told them my budget and they worked within it. Sadly those days have gone and I couldn't afford it anymore but if I could I would do it every time.

Yes, I would use an interior design service for projects which I can't handle. I would pay, at least $1500.

Nope. I already know what I like. Spend your money on a good contractor instead. That way, you'll end up with something you like that's built right.

I don't think I would. It would be a lot of money and it would feel like I am living in somebody else's house...
