When you register a car...

It doesn't mean that the car was first registered in the UK in 2002 as everyone is saying....

the "52" shows that it was registered between sept 2002 and april 2003.

the number plate shows you where the car was first registered and when.

The first two letters "BN" or "YE" etc show the location. the next two numbers show the part of the year "0" being april to sept and "5" being sept to april. The 2 number shows the year "2" is 2002 "3" is 2003 etc.

Thats why the newest reg is XX06 - april 06.

in sept you will start to see XX56.....

hope that helps! if your car has a 02 plate it could be a 2003 car (jan to april 2003) if you are lucky....check the log book!

surely 10 points? ill be your best friend.....

What Year Is A 52 Plate

Why have you started the numbers from 51?

The age identifier changes twice a year, in March and September. To distinguish between these two six monthly changes they have been allocated different number sequences. The following table shows how this will be achieved:

Year March September
2001 - 51
2002 02 52
2003 03
53

The use of the figure 5 to precede the year, for September registrations, will maximise the registration mark combinations and offer a long-lasting system. The 5 will change to 6 in 2010 and to 7 in 2020 and so on until 2050 when the format may be reversed to extend the format another 50 years

10 points please

A car registered in September 2002 up to February 2003.

because we now have 2 registration dates in the UK now, instead of the old one a year system, a 52 plate means the car has been registered on the second registration date in 2002, an 02 plate has been registered on the first date of 2002

"52" is the year the car was registered

if it was "02" it would have been registered from April 2002

If its "52" it means its been registered from September 2002

The same goes for the other plates, the first number telling you if its April or September, the 2nd number what year it is.

When you register a car...

It's the number on the registration plate. It means the car was 1st registered during the second reg period of 2002. The car is therefore 4 years old.

It's trade-speak, btw.

If the car was 1st registered during the 1st registration period, the number would be 02.
