Yes, it depends on where the carcinoid forms. If it forms in the lungs, thyroid, pancreas, stomach or duodenum, you will show positive 5 HIAA. If it forms in the midgut, your serotonin levels will be high. If it develops in the hindgut the only test to show it up would be a colonoscopy biopsy.
Here is a site with a video clip to explain the previous statements: http://www.caringforcarcinoid.org/carcinoid/aboutcarcinoid.asp
Click on the square with the intestines in it.
The Harvard Medical School Adobe presentation has some very good information in it also. It explains the role of the liver in carcenoid syndrome.
I hope this helps explain what is happening. Good luck.

The answer is yes. Most medical tests cant be trusted at the first try. That is why whenever you have a checkup, the doctor performs a series of diagnostic tests to back up any form of final prognosis. Many tests for cancer or a virus has to be taken several times to be somewhat positive that you have or have not a certain condition. Most of the time, the tests may show false results because the number of cells or the spread is beyond the level of detection of that certain test.
