Has he started answering like that lately or what?
if he has started lately then there is somehting wrong - being the shortest answer (its like he does not feel like talking or what)
But if this has been there then it is just a habit like other people when they talk they have to express with their hands.
If he has been talking like that before then I don't think it is rude at all - coz for friends I think its ok.

Absolutely not!1tis uncalled for and unproffessional!!!speaking from experience,i have worked in the Telecommunications industry and the last thing you need to hear is the person on the other end saying Aha!!or Yeah!!leaves alot to thing about in ones head...like....Gee where are you from???how were you brought up and the like

It does sound like he is inconsiderate or just plain rude. If it was happening to me, I would stop calling him. If he wants to know why I don't call anymore....I would just imitate his words and vocals back to him, and then add: You should save that for your other friends, I deserve a little more respect. If he really cares, he'll try to be more considerate when I call again. If I ever call him again!

Definitely rude. He sounds bored and disinterested before he's heard a word you have to say. I would tell him if he doesn't start being a little more polite you won't call at all. A happy-to-talk-to-you "hey there" or "hi" is much, much more appropriate.

I think you're calling him too often. Stop calling for a while and let him call you. Start calling him again only after a few weeks. You'll notice a big difference.

First, I really enjoyed how you worded your question. I assume you are asking if it's polite to answer in a way other than 'Hello' or something similar. I vote 'no'. Good luck.

Sounds like he's bored.
But like most guys, he just hates talking
on the phone.
What ever the reason, it sounds like he
needs to clean up his english and speak
to you in a more respectful way.

Sounds kind of rude to me, but I'm the one that says "Talk to me" when I answer the phone.

You can start by speaking English yourself....this is a subject of manners....Sweetheart, you need lessons yourself. Perhaps that is why you have some retarded boyfreind who has no class.

Patiently teach him how you want him to answer the phone. Let him know that if he wants to be with you, he should respect you.
