Philanthropy bases itself on GIVING, so any job that helps the world or makes a difference in someone's life is good. If you end up with a career that doesn't help people as much, you can still donate some of your earnings to people or places in need of help.

What PATH should you choose?
Any career that helps people, such as a career in health, medicine, or education. Voluntary work is also nice. Donating to human welfare is simply good as well.

What THINGS should you do?
Believe in yourself and strive to help people--you can do anything if your true intentions are to benefit other people. Give and don't expect anything in return, otherwise it would just be a "business."

What are some GENERAL things to know?
The meaning of philanthropy itself:

Philanthropy (n): altruistic concern for human welfare and advancement, usually manifested by donations of money, property, or work to needy persons, by endowment of institutions of learning and hospitals, and by generosity to other socially useful purposes.

I would begin with one of the greatest organizations around --> the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF at http://www.ioof.org). The whole purpose of this organization is to, as they state, "To improve and elevate the character of man."

From their website:
In 17th century England, it was odd to find people organized for the purpose of giving aid to those in need and of pursuing projects for the benefit of all mankind. Those who belonged to such an organization were called "Odd Fellows". Odd Fellows are also known as "The Three Link Fraternity" which stands for Friendship, Love and Truth.

Best of luck! :)
