A municipal jail is a city-owned city-runned jail housing inmates charged with minor offenses (misdemeanors). If someone in that same city commits a serious crime (felony) they will be sent to the county jail which is county-owned and county-ran.

If you get jail time and not prison time more there likely you will spend it there... our local jail will only hold, if you get less then one year. other wise you go to prison for the long haul....And like other have said.. it's run by the city or village, town or Country in your area......

it's jail for minor offenses, mostly nuisance type crimes. public drunkeness for example.
