AIDS, or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, is the advanced form of infection with HIV, human immunodeficiency virus.
HIV is a retrovirus and can take many years to reach the stage called AIDS in some cases, and only a few months in others. The virus is present before clinical AIDS, but has not reached the "full blown" stage.
To be diagnosed with AIDS, an HIV positive person either will have their helper T-cell count fall beneath the level that it can effectively fight infections, have an AIDS defining cancer, or have an opportunistic infection such as pneumocystis carinii. Everyone diagnosed with AIDS has the HIV virus, but not all persons infected with HIV have AIDS.
Persons who are HIV positive are often treated with anti-retroviral therapies to delay or prevent the develpopment of AIDS. Current therapies are so effective that viral counts may be undetectable to testing, but it is still present in hiding places or sanctuaries in the body and may become resistant to treatment and progress to the full blown illness of AIDS. Others remain well with undectable virus levels for many years.
Those who are HIV positive are monitored both for rising viral loads or falling T-cells. If this occurs, treatment is begun or changed to try to prevent progression.
In actual AIDS, the immune system is too impaired to fight ordinary infections and the risk of certain cancers also increases. AIDS deaths are usually from another infection or a related cancer. Persons with AIDS also will usually be treated with preventative antibiotics, antivirals and antifungals to prevent some of these infections. Infants and children with the disease may also be given gamma globulin.
Currently there is no vaccine or cure for HIV infection and the world-wide problem of HIV/AIDS is a pandemic affecting millions of people.

Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome or Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS or Aids) is a collection of symptoms and infections in humans resulting from the specific damage to the immune system caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).[1] The late stage of the condition leaves individuals prone to opportunistic infections and tumors. Although treatments for AIDS and HIV exist to slow the virus's progression, there is no known cure. HIV is transmitted through direct contact of a mucous membrane or the bloodstream with a bodily fluid containing HIV, such as blood, semen, vaginal fluid, preseminal fluid, and breast milk.[2][3] This transmission can come in the form of anal, vaginal or oral sex, blood transfusion, contaminated needles, exchange between mother and baby during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding, or other exposure to one of the above bodily fluids.
Most researchers believe that HIV originated in sub-Saharan Africa during the twentieth century;[4] it is now a pandemic, with an estimated 38.6 million people now living with the disease worldwide.[5] As of January 2006, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and the World Health Organization (WHO) estimate that AIDS has killed more than 25 million people since it was first recognized on June 5, 1981, making it one of the most destructive epidemics in recorded history. In 2005 alone, AIDS claimed an estimated 2.4 - 3.3 million lives, of which more than 570,000 were children.[5] A third of these deaths are occurring in sub-Saharan Africa, retarding economic growth and destroying human capital. Antiretroviral treatment reduces both the mortality and the morbidity of HIV infection, but routine access to antiretroviral medication is not available in all countries.[6] HIV/AIDS stigma is more severe than that associated with other life-threatening conditions and extends beyond the disease itself to providers and even volunteers involved with the care of people living with HIV.

AIDS stands for Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome...
Its one of the most fastest widespreading disease in the world....Its caused by the HIV (Human immunodeficiency virus) virus...Its a virus which belongs to the cateogary called retro-viruses...
As such there's no real cure which has been discovered yet...Nayb in the future with the help of biotech & nanotech,it might happen...
But you can prevent its spreading by avoidin Illicit sex as well as avoid gettin tattoos from unlicensed tattooists or avoid using drug needles which have been already used by others or simply "just dont do drugs.".

AIDS stands for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, and it is actually the final stages of the disease. The beginning stages of the disease is considered HIV, which stands for human immunodeficiency virus. This is what weakens and destroys the immune system and causes the person to develope full-blown AIDS. I hope that this helped you.
