Working with contractors is a huge help. If you are still in school I would suggest jumping at any internship that allows you to be around a job site and get the experience that way.

take construction engineering classes. i suspect these include materials science, civil engineering, and the higher maths. alternately, if young and foolish enough, join the army corps of engineers.

Scold with wild words with fierce looking face when sub-contractor is doing the wrong thing

Speak wild words with smiling face with sub-contractor during joking hour

Speak motivation word to Senior officer on top of you during their visit and find ways to scold the sub-contractor during your visit with them.

Talk loudly during site meeting, and remember make sure all your supportive sub-contractor is all besides you.
