Pulp testing is generally used to refer to the little electrical device that we use to send MINUSCULE pulses of current into your tooth to see when you begin to feel it. If you have a crown on the tooth, you generally can't get to the actual tooth structure to do a pulp test. There are other means of checking pulp vitality, but the electric pulp test gives quite valuable information when compared to other teeth in your mouth. I've even heard of people drilling a hole in the top of the crown just gain access to do a pulp test. If the tooth tests "normal," you just put a filling right in the hole in the crown and you're done with it. By the time you get to this point, though, you (the dentist) are pretty sure that you're gonna get a "dead tooth" result and the actual pulp test is just confirming your suspicion. If that happens, well you had to make a hole in the crown to do the root canal treatment anyway, so nothing is lost...
