Wake up at the same time everyday, no matter what time you went to sleep. Don't take any naps either.
Even if you do that though, at some point the insomnia will come back. All you can really do though is repeat the cycle of trying to wake up every morning and go to bed every night at the same time. Also, if this has been a chronic problem for you, see a doctor. I wouldn't suggest you try a prescription sleep aid before trying an over the counter one first though. Another thing that helps is regular nightly rituals. They help signal to your body and brain that you're ready to sleep. And try reading in bed for a little while with a comforting yellow light. Not great for your eyes but it might help you sleep. You can buy a yellow light bulb and scew it into a lamp on your nightstand.
Something that sometimes works for me is eating a bowl of cereal or anything else with a lot of carbs when I can't fall asleep. It's not great for your weight (actually it's really bad for your weight to eat late at night), but I don't always do it so it hasn't affected me too much. Since carbs tend to make me tired, it helps sometimes.

The best things I've found for sleep problems are:
MELATONIN
SLEEPY TIME EXTRA Herbal Tea.
Both of these will help you sleep without giving you the groggy feeling you get from sleeping pills.
